How do you combine video footage with different resolutions?
on Sep 1, 2014 at 12:26:55 am

I use Sony Vegas to make highlight videos, and usually the footage is from my Sony Camcorder. The resolution of my Vegas project is usually 1920x1080x32, 29.970i.

I have to use some footage from someone else, and it's grainy, non-HD stuff. It is 640x480x12.

So when I place the non-HD film on the video track, it shows up with black bars on the side.

Is it possible to do something to the non-HD film to get rid of the black bars? I realize it will likely resize the non-HD film and I will lose some stuff on the periphery, but that is preferrable to having the ugly black bars.

I have no idea how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Open Pan/Crop on the Event. Right-click in the Pan/Crop windows and select Match Output Aspect and the black bars will be gone.

Thank you very much. For some reason, following your directions still leaves a sliver of black on both edges. But pulling the crop tool works proportionally and I can reduce it a few notches to make it clean.

Thanks!

Does the original footage contain a sliver of black? Many analog sources have some black pixels on the sides and pulling in the crop is exactly how you should compensate for this.

I think so. Regardless, what I did (and what you confirmed) worked perfectly.

Thank you for taking the time to help out.
