Effect Idea
on Aug 5, 2014 at 11:31:26 pm

Guys imagine a guy standing in the rain.
I want to create a bubble around him like a force field protecting him from the rain.
I could create a transparent bubble with photoshop but I need raindrops "running" over it.
I can create the rain with particle illusion but I don't know how to create raindrops(water)running over force field(bubble).
Do you guys have any idea?
Thanks.

It looks terrible but if it's just an example, yeah I could use that idea.
How did you do that?

[Joao Souza] "It looks terrible"

My intention was for you to examine this and say if this is the general approach you wanted. Now, what part is unacceptable and which is not. You need to be more specific.

Yep that's the general approach I want but it doesn't look real in any level so the idea is correct but it looks terrible.

OK, now we are getting somewhere.

Where are you sourcing your Rain?

Grazie, I would like to know how you did this. The rain, though, is more of a waterfall than a rain shower.

Sorry but I don't understand your question.
Does "where" mean what program will I use to create my rain?
Or "where" like what background will I use?
I learned "where" = place so I'm confused cause I could use any place(background).
If "where" is about program, like I said probably I'll use particle ilusion.
Sorry for this confusion, english is not my native language ;)

[Stephen Mann] "Grazie, I would like to know how you did this."

I used the SONY SpherizeFX to allow the "Sphere" outline to take the illusion further.

[Stephen Mann] "The rain, though, is more of a waterfall than a rain shower"

Yes, yes it does. And I've used my attempt to try and outline the difficulty in managing the expectations of the USER's use of the S/W.

[Joao Souza] "Does "where" mean what program will I use to create my rain?"

Yes, and have you reconfirm that it WOULD be pI is good to hear from you. What settings would you use? What level of accuracy of the render would you use? I use Lagarith at full 1920x1080. There was an outside chance you would be actually filming the rain. Or on second thoughts may use another particle s/w solution.

Nope, not the BG. You going to need to get more complex with pI than I did - for sure! What I provided was two-fold:

1] To supply a graphical interpretation of your original outline. It would appear I achieved that with you.

2] As a starting place, that the overall expectations of reality that the "viewer" could cope with: does it look real enough to be plausible. From your reactions it isn't - I'm not surprised.

Here's the thing: How far down this exploration will you decide that there is a No-Win option and that you need to either:

1] Decide to use stronger/complex particle s/w.

or . . .

2] Decide to physically build a real sphere with real rain and go real-world.

Now, moving this fascinating exploration further, how to utilize the tools we have to get close to what YOU want. To do this then YOU need to be clearer. Might I suggest you consider:

A] How close to the sphere do you want your "viewer" to be?

B] Do you want the rain to "ping-off" the surface of the Sphere?

C] Do you want the rain to bounce off and up off the ground too?

D] Do you want to see dribbles and rivulets of water pouring over the surface of the Sphere?

E] Do you want to see through D] into the inside of the Sphere?

etc etc . . .

Now do you see where I am going with this? I do hope so.

So, to recap, this "venture" underlines those same issues recognized from the time of that first Cave Painter right up to the famous digital illusion high-end professionals at THE MILL - meaning that which is NOT real . . real. . .

Cheers

Grazie

I'm just having fun, don't need to be that deep and complicated.
I just don't know how to make the rain run over a transparent bubble(force field).
Nope, no real filming, just PI rain and a photoshoped transparent bubble.

Hi people,
This might sound daft but why not spray paint a soccer ball (or similar) bright green and film it in front of a green screen with a garden hose supplying water from above. With careful chroma keying you might wind up with just a sheet of rain
bouncing off a sphere...Pete.

Well Pete one thing about water it is transparent. And that will show the GREEN of the painted ball.

But, in any event, our friend here wanted to go purely digital and use Particle Illusion s/w. My extended points were that there needs to be a management of the expectations of the Editor with the s/w available. And yes, I did suggest going physical too.

Daft? nah . ..

Yes, Particle Illusion is possible, but I would prefer Trapcode Particular to get more realistic results.
