Can I animate seperate lines of a graph?
on Jul 24, 2014 at 4:28:58 pm

Hi, I'm making a video for educational purposes. The host is talking about the relationship of bone, muscle, and fat growth in livestock.

He will say essentially "bone growth plateaus first, followed by muscle, then fat"

During this, I want each separate line of the graph to follow its curve as he talks about it. Can I do this in Vegas?

Thanks,
Tyler

Imagine a line graph, with the vertical line being growth and the horizontal one being age.

As an animal ages, bone growth plateaus first. (I want this line to appear as he's talking)

Then muscle (same thing, but different line)

Then fat (same thing, again different line)

I can recreate the graph image. I didn't know if I could animate a line like in Adobe Premier and totally recreate the graph in program.

There's a free program called "Route Generator" that may work for this. Get it at routegenerator.net.
It's a bit kludgy, but it does make an avi file that you can bring into your project.

You can probably do this quite easily all in Vegas Pro using Generated Media Solid Color and the Mask tool in Pan/Crop. Animate the mask to reveal the bars made up of Generated Media.

John is right. The Reveal would be the easiest one to go for. Also if you add a slight blur to soften the LEADING point of the line it'll appear more organic. Of course you could also add a TEXTURE to the line as well as a slight shadow. Of yes, don't forget experimenting with an SFX as the line is "drawn" or chalked behind the speaker!

This should take you more than 10 minutes.

I have access to photoshop, so I wanted to share this cool tutorial I found:

It looks like I can make things as clean as I'd like this way, although it will be slower.

Here's something I did with RouteGen in about three minutes.
