Problems playing test disk
on Jul 11, 2014 at 6:05:29 am

I have yet another question about the audio on my my Blu-ray rewritable disk.

In preview mode I have audio playing with a menus background media. Since I have lots of space available on the disk I have a complete audio track, about 3 minutes long if I recall. In preview mode this can play all of the way through if no button is pressed but on the test disk it plays for about 2 seconds & stops. Why?

On another menu if I click a link it goes & opens the menu which displays both audio & video for about 1 second & then does this again & again & again. Yet as I said the entire disk plays without a problem on the PC. Is it likely to be the disk? For the record its a TDH BD_RE 25gb disk.

Thanks in advance

It could be. One problem may be that your Blu-ray player doesn't handle rewritable disks properly. Some only work correctly with BD-R and not BD-RE. Also make sure that the firmware on your Blu-ray player is up to date. Unlike DVD players which never got updated, Bu-ray players need to be updated with new firmware quite often. Bring the disk to your local TV store and try it in a few Blu-ray players just to be sure it's the disc and not the player.

The firmware is up to date since it's a so called smart Blu-ray Player with internet access etc.

Thinking that it might still be the test disk I burned a real one but unfortunately had the same results. I can still call up the dar file & it plays perfectly on PC. I think that its time that I just move on to next project as there is only so much time one can waste. Thanks anyway.

Thanks in advance

Just a guess, but try a 1-minute music background.

That would suggest that the preview isn't a true preview or mirror image.

The project is small enough that I could change it to DVD & burn it to a re writable DVD. The only thing that puts me off doing this that it rakes so long to re render. It's a pity that Vegas doesn't have the option to turn PC off once burning is complete. Maybe I missed this option.

Thanks in advance

It should be which is why I suggest that you try different players. The preview is just emulating what "should" happen. What actually happens is totally dependent on how the manufacturer made the real player.

Well, it is, but you are observing a difference in players.

Where I was going was - looking for a difference in the BD player performance. Your background music may have run over a buffer limit of the player, and if trimming the length of the background music fixed the problem, then there's your answer.

Back when writable DVDs were coming online we had similar problems. A player with strict compliance with the DVD specs would not play a DVD-R, but it would play a DVD+R. I suspect that BD player manufacturers are also experiencing similar issues as BD players differ in how they meet or play outside the BD specs. So, if some players will play a 3-minute music background and some won't is no big surprise.

Have you tried other disc brands. I had a similar issue a while back and discovered the discs were not burning properly, even though the writing software said it was complete. I could only play menus but not content.
