[Roger Bansemer] "Any recommendations on the new SmartSound plugin for Vegas?"
I don't have it for Vegas Pro but I just bought the SmartSound Plug-in for Final Cut Pro X not too long ago and it's really great to be able to generate music to the exact length you need in your project. From the web site it looks like it's just as easy to use in Vegas Pro. I'm a big fan of SmartSound music and have lots if their libraries so I'd be interested to know how well it works with Vegas Pro too.

Seems it might be handy somewhat, but its not tightly integrated as
it should be. Have no need for this personally, already have a
versatile ton load of Music Library sitting and waiting.

Do you know if it has the ability to change the mood of the music with a slider at certain segments of the video. If so it would be helpful.

Not with a slider, but with a timeline (on the Sonicfire Pro timeline) marker. I also like the ability to add hits, like a cymbal crash when the diver hits the water. If you are using a multi-track album (I think that's all Smartsound products today), you have pretty much an infinite range of modifications.

Hi Stephen,
Can you add and position a "hit" by using the plugin on the Vegas timeline? If that's the case, this would be great.

[Steve Rhoden] "but its not tightly integrated as it should be."
How "tightly" should it be integrated? This is how it works in FCP X too. It launches it's interface and pushes the music back to the NLE. What's wrong with that?

Whats wrong with that John? Take a look back at CineScore,
THAT was "tightly" integrated.

OK, I bought it.

It does save me some time, but not a lot. I'm not sure it was worth $50.

What's good: It opens in Express Tracks which lets me select the music I want to customize into my project, with the duration already set. After modifying the mood, tempo, etc, clicking on "Send" adds a new audio track to the Vegas timeline. (Every edit in SonicFire makes a new track in the Vegas timeline). If I click on "Insert", it opens a track on the SonicFire Pro timeline where I can change moods and add hits as needed.

What's missing: This would make the product worth $50 hands down- I still have to manually copy the video from my Vegas timeline selection into the SonicFire timeline if I want to sync hits or mood changes to whatever is happening on the video.

What's REALLY missing: It's a script, not a plug-in. A truly integrated SonicFire plug-in would be a winner.

Exactly my point Stephen when i mentioned that its not
tightly integrated. And not worth the price indeed.

Stephen, their web site says that markers are transferred from Vegas Pro to SmartSound so you could mark the hits in Vegas and have the markers show up in SmartSound and never have to transfer the video. At least that's what their web site leads me to believe. Would that help your workflow?

Well, Mr. read the manual.... (vbg)

Tried it, and yes, there they are (the markers). No need to transfer the video, just name the markers and they show up on the SonicFire timeline.

I wonder what other surprises are in there if I just read a bit more.....

I gotta wonder if this extension is a trial balloon to see if there is any interest in the Vegas community to possibly fully integrate SF as a plug-in.

I doubt it. This is exactly how it works in Final Cut Pro X. You drop a generated media clip onto the timeline, resize it to the length you need, then press a Generate Music button and it opens the SmartSound interface, you compose your music and it gets placed back into your project. I'd be surprised if they did something tighter with Vegas Pro.

Off topic a bit but why is my "add hit" button greyed out? What do I do to initialize it?
Thanks

Roger, I've never seen that. Make sure you have hit files in C:\ProgramData\SmartSound Software Inc\Sound Files Hits

You could also just call SmartSound. Their support was relatively fast the one time I had a question.

Yea, on my Mac version the button says "Add Hit File" and when you do, there are lots of different hits to choose from. This assumes you have downloaded the hit files when you installed.

I wonder if you could make your own hitfiles? They are sds files and they play in VLC, so why couldn't you make your own? Problem I've found is that there doesn't seem to be any sds support in any PC audio editor. I did find one for the Mac, though.

For John:
The sds editor was mentioned here: http://www.audiofile-engineering.com/support/manuals/we/1/html/index.html

But, I decided to tinker a bit.

In "C:ProgramDataSmartSound Software IncSound Files Hits" create a new directory named "My Hits"
Put a .wav file in "My Hits".
Done.

I should just go ahead and buy it but if there's a trial I'd like to give it a test drive. Seems there's no trial version though?

There is a trial version of SonicFirePro from SmartSound. The Vegas plug-in just makes it easier to use with Vegas. Personally, I think the price of the Vegas script is a bit high for what it does.

Cool thanks. They have a bunch of Apps for OS X. The Audio Editor is $60.

Oh, I get what you mean... If I remember correctly Cinescore had a habit of having to render things before you could use them so you would try and select different sounds and be constantly paused while it unpacked, or rendered, or did something that slowed things down. It wasn't exactly an optimal workflow but it was more tightly integrated I agree.

Yea, I was quite surprised to see it. I had just purchased the SmartSound plug-in for Final Cut Pro X or else I might have bought the Vegas Pro one. It sounds like the Vegas version has better interoperability due to Vegas' scripting capabilities. Very nice to see it.
