Problem with slow motion and stabilizer with vegas 12.
on Jun 16, 2014 at 8:05:25 pm

I have a problem using Vegas 12.367:

when using slowmotion (built in playback rate) in conjunction with stabilization (sony vegas stabilize plugin) i get a shaky footage like in this youtube video at point 4:

I have used:

1. orginal footage / smart resample on
2. Playback rate 0,5 / not stabilized / smart resample
3. Playback rate 1 / light stabilization / smart resample
4. Playback rate 0,5 / light stabilization / smart resample
5. Playback rate 0,5 / light stabilization / disable resample

The best result should be 4, but it aint.

The original file can be downloaded at: http://www.fotosmiley.ro/stuff/00127.MTS

Am i missing something or there's a bug in Vegas?

Try stabilizing and render out that bit of footage first,
then drop it back on the timeline and continue with your usual edits.

No, its not for nothing. If you want detailed precision in your
work its worth it at times. That's why you charge clients for your
work. If it was easy they would do it themselves.

Steve, you are right, it's not for nothing, because the results are beatiful! But i guess Sony didn't had that in mind when they wrote the code for the program.

I will try to update Sony Vegas and see if this still happens again.

It's pretty annoying to add stabilizer effect from media fx already. But to make a new project and render it for every file that would need stabilizing for a slowmotion effect in the base project, it's almost too much. And nonsense!

I will come back

It's confirmed, same happens whit latest build of Vegas 12. Shaky image when stabilizing in conjunction with slowmotion.

I'm blown away by this. Still hoping that i'm doing it wrong, but it seems like not.

Marius, personally still when i am stabilizing an event, i dont even
bother to look at the built in stabilizing feature of Vegas, its
inferior and a cut down version of Prodad Mercalli.
What i use and the utmost best is the Prodad Mercalli plugin itself.
Outputs excellent results. So if you have the resources and need, that
is what i recommend you to get, You wont have these issues anymore.

It seems that After Effects cant either do stabilizing in conjunction with slow-motion, so if we want to use both effects on the same clip we have to do them separately or use third party stabilization.

Thank to those who replied.

If I have clips that need stabilizing, I would ALWAYS add only Stabilizer, get the settings correct for that clip and then render out a new stabilized version. Repeat that for all clips that need to be stabilized. Now finish your edit using these new stabilized clips. Sometimes it's best to do things one step at a time.

Prodad have another standalone tool - ReSpeedr, which can slow down and stabilize at the same time, but their Mercalli is the best to stabilize footage.

Edward, when working with 4 hours of footage and having to stabilize at least 20-30 clips, it's a little hard to stabilize each clip separately. That's why there is a timeline with multiple clips and layers on it, to benefit from it! Sony has done a nasty job and I can't imagine a reason for doing it! But if that's how thing are, we always find a solution!

Sooo... I tried Mercalli Stabilizer, v2.105. It does it's job better than sony's own stabilizer. And works with slowmotion like a charm.

In general seems like interlace footage is a little off hand for stabilizers. I shoot with a Sony NX5 witch gives me 50i interlace footage, and from here all the problems.

Anyway,
Thanx to all who have written. Happy editing!
