XD 422 Render

Hey guys...
Trying to get the definitive answer here. Have to deliver a 60 minute show to AXS TV in:

XDCAM 422/1080i/60-50mbps 29.97 48/16 pcm

I thought it would be the MXF template, but when I tried it, it doesn't seem to want to play nice on my macs.

Any suggestions please?

I have a Mac Pro and Mac Mini at my disposal. Sorry for the ignorance as this task is new to me.

On Vegas Sony goes strictly by their own product specs and this means XDCAM 50Mbps 422 is in an MXF file.

XDCAM EX is in an MP4 file, but it is 35Mbps 420 which is not what has been spec'd to you, but should be a similar video quality.

The Mac world is Quicktime MOV happy. MOV or MP4 should always work. I know you can purchase an MPEG-2 decoder for Windows Quicktime from Apple, but I don't know about encoders. Maybe third party.

Maybe cliptoolz can be used. I don't know if it can remux but if not you can probably pass it an intermediate, like uncompressed, DNxHD, or maybe Cineform, and encode to 50Mbps 422 in a MOV/MP4.

[John Halterman] "I thought it would be the MXF template, but when I tried it, it doesn't seem to want to play nice on my macs."
Can you define what "playing nice" means?

I can play MXF files from Vegas Pro on my Mac using the VLC player. I cannot import them into FCP X without a 3rd part plug-in. I can render XDCAM 422/1080i/60-50mbps 29.97 48/16 pcm to a QuickTime container using the Mac XDCAM support provided by Sony.

So it all depends on what you mean by "play nice".

Convert them to what? I'm really not following what you want to do.

Let's start over. You said that AXIS TV wants submission in "XDCAM 422/1080i/60-50mbps 29.97 48/16 pcm" format. Do they want an MXF file or MOV file?

Then you'll need to create this on your Mac.

I would install the Avid DNxHD codec on both your PC and Mac. I have a tutorial on my web site that shows you how to make an Avid DNxHD Template for Vegas Pro.

Then render an Avid DNxHD QuickTime file from Vegas Pro and copy it to your Mac.

Finally convert that to XDCAM HD422 1080i 50Mbps using Apple Compressor on your Mac.

You may or may not need the Sony XAVC/XDCAM Plug-in. I have it installed but I think the XDCAM codecs come from Apple when you buy Compressor, FCP X, or Motion. You'll need to make a new Compressor setting for XDCAM HD422 1080i 50Mbps. Then you can convert the DNxHD file to it for submission.

I tried cliptoolz and it can remux an MXF file from Vegas to a MOV file. No re-encoding. One of its conversion codecs list is "wrap to MOV" which is just going to do a remux.

The version of cliptoolz I tried only recognized one audio channel. I am not sure if the problem is me or the software. I am sure the developer support can answer that quickly.

Norman,
Thank you for the tip. I tried the demo version and wound up with the same result... no video and one mono audio channel. I'm going to shoot the dev an inquiry and see what happens. Now on to Johns suggestion. Really need to find an easy way to do this. Vegas would make editing the show much easier than FC

I've been learning FCP X and while it's growing on me, I really miss the ability to apply FX at the track level and the audio capabilities like buses. Why would Vegas be better for this project for you? (just curious)

Hi John, and thank you again for your help. First off... I'm very fluent and fast with Vegas as I've been using it since it's first incarnation mainly for audio. Video was second for me. Our show on AXS is a music artist type show. I'm the audio supervisor for the show and recently we've started editing the show as well to have more creative control. Our workflow is that we shoot all the packaged segments, edit them and then shoot our live artist performances and couch interviews at the AXS studios. So now they are giving us those live to tape segments and we are doing more of a simple "assembly" just tightening things up but I'm really able to manipulate the audio very quickly and easily with great results as Vegas as you know excels at that. Our show is called "Skee Live" and is on Fridays at 5pm est/8pm pst on AXS TV. It's on all the major carriers ATT/DIsh/Direct/Verizon. I'd love for you to take a look and see what we are doing with Vegas, thanks to you! ;)

Yea, I hear yea. That's one reason that I won't leave Vegas Pro. The audio capabilities are better than anything else out there.

I will definitely look for it in my cable line-up because I have Verizon.

You sound like me. I have a Mac Mini for audio work, a Mac Pro for heavy video editing, and a MacBook Pro for everything else along with my iPad (but no bootcamp on the iPad lol!).
