Sony Vegas Pro 12 64-Bit possible missing codecs?
on May 17, 2014 at 1:01:23 pm

I have no idea what the cause of this was but I recorded a video for 10 Minutes with the option to facecam in Vegas Pro 12,everything worked out absolutely fine with that video and it uploaded to YouTube without any issues up until this point, so basically I did 2 attempts of 2 different recording with my webcam in the vegas program and both seem to have the same issue which is that they are not showing their full length recordings, what I mean is that it only shows a print length of 8 seconds then the video is over, however it says that it was infact recorded for 20 Minutes in the details of the file(Tried opening it in Windows Media Player it only plays 8 Seconds there aswell)I assume I am missing a few codecs for Vegas.

You're not missing any codecs because Vegas doesn't use any codecs when it captures. I assume you are using the DV capture utility and just because it works with a USB web cam you think that's supported but it's not. That utility is for capturing DV video from tape via Firewire. It is capturing uncompressed video and uncompressed audio from your web cam via USB. If your web cam is the normal SD 640x480, that would be about 800MB per minute of video+audio. At that data rate, a normal 7200RPM hard drive would be dropping frames and a 20 minute video would be 16GB in size.

You don't want to use Vegas Pro to capture from your web cam. Use some other program that actually does use a codec and doesn't create such large files.

Can you recommend an alternative program?

Camtasia, Snagit, or Jing come to mind. Usually web cams come with recording software so check the CD that came with your web cam. I use TechSmith Camtasia.
