Using Vegas 12 to edit OMF and AAF files
on May 11, 2014 at 5:13:41 am

Hi people! to put it brefly, i have an OMF file (400 megabytes) and the AAF file of a proyect, but i need to use Vegas to edit the sound. Is there a way to open OMF in vegas, then save it to the AAF so it can be open again in other program like Avid or Pro Tools? I know that now Vegas 12 supports AAF import/export.

Can i convert the OMF to any other format to read for Vegas, and save the modifications to an AAF that is open on another system refering to OMF's?

I need help to figure if this can be done

Thanks in advance!

No, Vegas Pro supports the newer AAF format but not the older OMF format.

Yes, but you'll either need converter software or a DAW that supports both OMF and AAF. All major DAW's have the capability to read and write AAF and OMF files: Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Sonar, & Cubase. It will be difficult to find a stand alone converter since all DAW's have this capability built in so there is no real market for a stand alone converter anymore.

Is there a known converter software to do this? Does Media Composer open the OMF's done with Pro Tools?

I looked and most of the ones I found were no longer being sold because all DAW's had this capability built in now.

This is best asked on the AVID forum. OMF is an older format that is slowly being replaced by AAF. I found a few tutorials on how to export OMF from Avid but none to import it. I'm assuming that AAF is the preferred interchange format between MC and PT but I'm not a MC user so it's best to ask on the Avid forum.

All I can tell you is that Vegas Pro can import AAF but not OMF.

Hi John:

I just came across this thread. Just the answer I was looking for! Thank you. After importing the AAF file back into Sony, what happens? Does it go back to original place it was extracted from on the timeline, or do I have to open the file and position it back onto the timeline? The audio that is currently on the timeline, will I have to remove it or will the update be automatic since everything is in the same folder? Sorry if these are silly. I have been surfing the internet for the answers.

Best,

Debbie

It goes back to the original place because AAF maintains the timecode.

When you import an AAF file it's like opening a project. The current project will be closed before the AAF file is imported so the timeline will be emptied and then filled with the AAF file contents.
