Anyone know if the Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder works with Vegas 13 for recording?

Thanks!

Can you get a Thunderbolt port on a PC? The only ones I've seen are PCI cards and PCI is slower than Thunderbolt.

The UltraStudio Mini Recorder is a Mac device (i.e., there are only drivers for OS X). Therefore it only works on a Mac and does not work with Vegas Pro or any other PC NLE.

Actually they are starting to make PC motherboards with Thunderbolt but that's not going to help either because there are no Windows drivers for the device.

I was considering using Bootcamp for use with a Macbook Pro, so I didn't look into the specs for a driver. One of my biggest issues with BM is they have TERRIBLE details with specs for items. I have used about 5-10 of their devices and there is so much you find out after you purchase them. BUT when things are finally "ready for primetime" much of their products are amazing...just wait a year before you buy!!

Thanks for the input John!

That is certainly a possibility. You could capture on OS X and edit on Windows with Vegas Pro as long as there was a PC codec for their capture format.

Also, just looking at the BM website, you can download their desktop video software to work with Windows and that is under the support for the UltraStudio....

I was just looking at the UltraStudio Mini Recorder which only comes in a Thunderbolt version but I see they also have a UltraStudio USB 3.0 version with Vegas Pro support.

That still doesn't answer the question of whether you could capture on OS X with the UltraStudio Mini Recorder and use the software from the UltraStudio USB 3.0 with the files on Windows.

Since our go round with BM's video that is created with the ATEM TVS, I am curious to know what it encodes to. As I said before, I can't find any info on it on their website and also manual.
It works with Premiere, Avid, FCP and such, so I was wondering if it did with SVP. I use their Intensity card (PCIe) to capture from my Beta and VHS decks in Vegas, not sure if this would the same way or not...

Their web site does say "UltraStudio are QuickTime and WDM based and work with any Mac OS X and Windows video software!" so you might want to contact them just to be sure but it looks like if you capture on the Mac you should be able to edit on Windows.

Are there formats that you can only use on a Mac vs PC? I am not aware of this and thought is was more a player/editor issue. Again BM is bad at "getting back to you" on things. I sent them two emails about the ATEM stream and SVP and such, and the silence is deafening!! LOL!!

Thanks John!

Yes. It's not so much the codecs as the codec/container combination. On the Mac there is only one native container and that's QuickTime. There is no confusion. On the PC, there are a multitude of containers (e.g., AVI, MPG, M2T, WMV, etc.) using a variety of codecs but Vegas doesn't support all codecs in all containers.

For example, Vegas Pro expects HDV to be in an MPEG2 Transport Stream M2T container. If I plug my HDV camera into my Mac, it will capture HDV to QuickTime container that works great with Final Cut Pro X. If I give that QuickTime file to Vegas Pro it won't know how to play it because it's not expecting HDV in a MOV file, it expects it in an M2T file. So it's quite possible (and easy) to capture video on a Mac that can't be used on a PC in Vegas Pro. Since the UltraStudio Mini Recorder is a video capture device, I would be very careful that what it captures can be recognized by Vegas Pro.
