recovering files deleted on a Sony NEX-10
on Apr 16, 2014 at 4:48:56 am

I know this is off topic concerning Sony Vegas, but I respect the opiniona of the people who frequent this forum. I accidentally deleted some AVCHd files on my camera, a Sony NEX-10. I realized immediately I made a mistake and have not recorded anything on the card since this mistake. What are my best options to recover these files- the main files are a take over one hour long. These files are extremely important to me and I need a solution that is as close to no fail as possible. I really really need these files. Thanks for taking the time to read this-Tony

Try photo-rec from CGsecurity. It has a good price, too: FREE!

Hi Antonio,
I have a VG10. We used a similar recovery tool a few years ago. It worked better with the card still in the camera, and the camera connected via usb. It was on a friends computer. Will ask him and post if you still need it.

Thank you everyone for their help, I haven't attempted to recover the files yet. They are extremely, extremely important and I'm a little nervous to attempt it and waa going to see all the different responses before I made a move. I can't lose these files and want to make sure that I don't do anything more to complicate things. What program did you use? I want to use the best program to ensure that I recover the files. I'm going to check out all the different programs before I make an attempt. Thank you Nigel for recommending a program that is free, have you used it before? What were your experiences, or any tips? Colin, if you could find out what program your friend used, since it was successful with the nex10. Did you recover all of the files or only portions? Thanks for the tip about recovering from the camera itself, this was one thing I was curious about. Would I be better off going to someone who specializes in recovery? Would they have programs I won't have access to. Thanks to everyone again-Tony

How about "cloning" the SD card and then work with the cloned SD card to restore the video files? This way, you can safely leave the original SD card untouched.

You might need two SD card readers/writers, one for reading the original SD card and the other for writing the contents to an additional SD card (if connecting your camcorder thru USB does not work).

1) First, for safety, lock the original SD card to make it "read-only" to avoid any more messing on the SD card.

2) Duplicate the SD card by a cloning utility. A free utility HDD Raw Copy Tool should do. Refer to http://www.clonemysdcard.com/en for a detailed instruction.

3) Select the SD card reader (which has your original SD card) as the "Source" and select the other SD card writer (which has a new SD card) as the "Target".

3) When the cloning is done, use an undeleter of your choice to recover the video files on the cloned SD card. For reference, another free utility called Recuva should do. http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download

Just for testing, I deleted a couple of video files in an SD card in my Lumix GH3, and successfully recovered the deleted video files on the "cloned" SD card following the above procedure.

Good luck.

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Step_By_Step

It's quite a reputable tool:

http://download.cnet.com/TestDisk-and-PhotoRec/3000-2248_4-10511775.html

The one limitation of photo-rec is that it renames your files, and it simply places them in one folder. It does not preserve filenames nor folder structures, but it does work. Read the reviewer comments for other feedback.

Sorry for the delay A (away for Easter),
My friend had the software on his old computer and it is gone.
I like the idea of cloning the SD card (after locking it)
You can also try Sony tech support. They are usually quite helpful with the higher end camcorders.
They might even have a software tool you can use.

Hi Antonio,
Here is the response I got from Sony. They have a memory card recovery tool.
Colin Morris,

Thank you for contacting Sony Support.

I understand that you want to recover the videos you deleted on the memory card.

If you are using a Sony memory card, then it may be possible to recover deleted pictures and videos from your SD card. Sony has a software called Memory Card File Rescue which can be used to recover files that have been deleted from Sony memory card. However, if you are using a third party memory card, you may call the manufacturer to check if they have an available recovery software that will allow you to retrieve the videos.

Please click on the link below to download and install the software using a compatible Windows operating system:

http://esupport.sony.com/swu/7184/US/

If Memory Card File Rescue is unable to recover the files, then the memory card may need to be sent to a professional data recovery service company like Sony Media Services or DriveSavers Data Recovery. Please visit their respective websites below for further information on their services.

Sony Media Service Center:
http://mediaservices.sel.sony.com/

DriveSavers Data Recovery:
http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com

Thank you for choosing Sony.

Colin, thanx for going above and beyond what a response to a post should be. I tried the programs, but unfortunately I was only able to recover about 15 minutes from an hour. The recovery company was priced way out, ($900 for 32gb card) Thank you for taking the time to research and contact Sony for me. It's a forum Llike this that displays the true communityof the internet. Thanx again for all your help-Tony
