COM surrogate has stopped working
on Apr 3, 2014 at 1:01:42 am

Just upgraded to a new PC with Windows 8.1 (from XP SP3) and loaded Vegas Pro 10e.

Thought I'd try the free Cineform codec so installed GoPro Studio Edit. "Render As" showed the Cineform codec, but when I tried to render, this error message came up:

COM surrogate has stopped working

Googling that phrase I've found references to "old versions of codecs" "DEP" and "dllhost.exe", but not sure if any of that will solve the Vegas render issue.

Right now I've uninstalled it while I seek answers.

Anyone else come across this or have a solution?

Hi Chris,
I've seen the COM Surrogate crash with dllhost.dll as fault module at the splash screen when I started up Vegas 10e on my old WinXP system after upgrading from SP2-->SP3, I had an older version of the Cineform codec installed but it wasn't the culprit, went through a reinstall of Vegas without uninstalling and it worked fine, just going through the checklist:
  • Could you render to any format at all or is it just affecting the GoPro codec?
  • Could you start up GoPro Studio Edit and get a source video converted there?
  • Have you checked if your Windows OS' files are not corrupt?

(I'm just going through from what I remember when I had COM Surrogate crashing Vegas)

COM Surrogate is largely related to thumbnail extraction in Windows Explorer but it acts as a sacrifice when thumbnail previews are corrupted so that Explorer doesn't crash, although it tends to bring down Sony Vegas and other media apps too, possibly due to codec conflicts.
Hope you find the problem,

RickAVC

Vegas, v10 on, uses the Cineform SDK to directly access the Cineform codec.

The GoPro studio you installed is very new and Vegas 10 is very old. I wonder is some things have changed in that interface between then and now.

Have you contacted GoPro Cineform support.

I also have GoPro studio installed, but I have Vegas 12 on Windows 7 and it works fine for me.

Yea, the specs for Vegas Pro 10.0 only go up to Windows 7 so I'm wondering if it's a Windows 8 issue? I had several things break when I tested them on Windows 8 so I stayed at 7. Also CineForm has had a on-again/off-again relationship with Vegas and, as Norman pointed out, changed their API calls requiring paying CineForm customs to upgrade just to get it working again (I know it happened to me). Good luck, you may have to upgrade your Vegas Pro for Windows 8.

Thanks JR

Can you give us any examples? I've just finished editing my first project under Windows 8.1 and didn't appear to have any issues with VP 10e.

Actually, they were issues within my personal programs because of security changes that caused me to have to do things differently. I fixed them, but I found the Windows 8 desktop extremely frustrating to use without having a menu to access my programs. Visually it looks like something from the 1980's with it's flat apperance. Also, once again Microsoft has moved everything to a different place just for the heck of it! After just having to re-learn where everything is with Windows 7 over XP, I was in no mood to relearn everything again with Windows 8 for absolutely no value add. Windows 8 is a disaster IMHO. There is absolutely no reason for a Windows 7 user to upgrade unless they love being frustrated, but we're straying off-topic here (sorry).
