Upgrading to Vegas Pro 12 to Edit 4K?
on Mar 28, 2014 at 1:36:49 am

In anticipation of my GH4s' arrival in another month, I was playing around with trying to export 4K in Vegas Pro 10 and realized how limited this version is. Although it allows for setting up projects in 4K, rendering them out leaves a lot to be desired.

Does Vegas Pro 12 provide significantly more 4K render options, such as rendering 4K WMVs?

Also, I'm very intrigued by this article on converting the GH4's 4K footage into 1080p 10-bit 4:4:4 via transcoding to ProRes or CineForm. Will Vegas Pro 12 support that process, or is that something I'll need to do in After Effects?

Trying to figure all of this out before I start shooting 4K! Thanks a lot for any help!

Here is a previous thread.

I don't bother with WMV stuff, but I tried entering 3840x2160 and it is limited to 2048 in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. Does WMV even support 4k in general? It does not in Vegas.

Uncompressed can do 4k
XAVC and XAVC-S do 4k
Sony and Mainconcept AVC can do 4k via custom entered frame dimensions. Sony AVC may not be the best candidate since it's bitrate tops out at 26Mbps.
Cineform can do 4k, if you have the premium version of GoPro studio.

I'm with Norman on WMV. What you may find with the GH4 is that you may not need to go to an intermediate codec because the quality is so high.
Here is the link to some GH4 footage. You can just drop it on the timeline in SVP 12.
Regarding the GH4 specs- 1 reviewer confirms getting 4:2:2 4K via HDMI. Here is a quote from Panasonic on the No Film School site: "It is confirmed that while the GH4 will only give you 8-bit 4:2:0 in 4K and 1080p to the SD cards, it will give 10-bit 4:2:2 4K and 10-bit 4:2:2 1080p from the HDMI port on the camera. There aren’t any 4K HDMI external recorders just yet..."
