What codec for .flv files?
on Jan 15, 2009 at 12:01:37 am

Hey guys, I'd like to drop .flv files on to my timeline, what codec do I need? I'm pretty sure .flv is a flash format file, though not certain. Is it as simple as installing Flash? If so, is there a downloadable version? It's for my offline PC, so I can't install it in the normal manner, by visiting their site, and doing the auto install. I'm using Vegas 7.0e, so anyone with experience loading .flv files into that version of Vegas, I'd love to have your input. Thanks!

Vegas doesn't support the editing of FLV files so you will have to use an external program like Super(c) to convert them into a format that Vegas can edit.

You can open FLV files directly in Vegas by using a VFW (VideoForWindows) filter.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/

Install FFDSHOW and run "VFW configuration" (not "Video decoder configuration" which is for DirectShow decoding) from Start menu group, go to the Decoder tab, Codecs section, and make sure FLV1, VP6F are set to libavcodec.

(FLV files with H26x codec are not guaranteed.)

I've followed the steps that you listed. Now what? I still can't edit .flv in Sony Vegas. What am I missing? Thanks.

You are right. I just tried opening a flv with Vegas 6,7,8 and 9. It doesn't work with 7 and above. Only Vegas 6 opens it. Sorry for the mislead. I thought 7 was also able to open it with ffdshow.

BTW, VLC Player can DirectStreamCopy a FLV file into a MP4 container without re-encoding. I tested it using a FLV file (h264) and Vegas 9 opened it.

just tried this - no dice with SVP 9.0 checked the codecs....SVP sat on the files for a while and looked like it was reading them, and then coughed up an error message - the same one i gt when i try to give it a MOV file...

What I've found, since posting this question originally is it's best to convert your .flv to .avi using a converter program like Total Video Converter. http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimedia_and_Graphics/Video_and_Animat...
Then it's simply a matter of loading the .avi file on to your timeline, and editing at will. Hope this helps?

I just used the Riva FLV Encoder, which is donor-ware and converts some standard file formats to FLV.
