AVI no video in timeline - SVP13 64-bit
on Jul 13, 2018 at 3:26:11 am

I don't recall ever having issues playing back AVI files inside SVP13 (64-bit), but I have a client from UK who wants me to edit his 9-minute 650MB AVI file. Upon dragging it to the timeline, the audio waveform shows up just fine but the video track is all black. I have Vegasaur, so I used the Transcoder to convert the AVI to MP4, but after waiting 22 minutes through the rendering process, Vegas crashed. I started it up again. Crashed again.

I used VLC media player to convert, but it won't respect the original 30.000 fps. It kicks out some bizarre 21.### number. The profile I'm using has all the basic settings set to 'Same as source'. When this didn't work, I manually entered the '30.000 fps'.....same result.

I can play the video just fine on my Windows 7 64-bit through VLC player, but it's Vegas that doesn't wanna play with me ☹ HELP! Don't want to lose the client. Need money to eat food!

[Freddy Rodriguez] " Upon dragging it to the timeline,"
And have you set your Project Settings to Match the Media, through the Project Settings? Hmmm?

of course...automatically! I don't see how this would make the video show all black, even if I got the project settings wrong. Worst case, I'd see black bars around the video from getting the aspect ratio wrong, or maybe the frame rate wrong. This doesn't seem to be the case

[Freddy Rodriguez] "of course...automatically!"
Well, I had to ask. I don’t take anything for granted.

Now do a MediaInfo on that AVI. Let’s see the results.

Hmm.. I can’t see all the data. It’s truncated. Did you use the Free MediaInfo utility?

is there particular data you're looking for in the AVI file, that will allow me to correct the issue with viewing the video within SVP13? hmmm?

[Freddy Rodriguez] "is there particular data you're looking for in the AVI file, that will allow me to correct the issue with viewing the video within SVP13?"
Maybe? I wanted to see from MediaInfo what it is inside that AVI, as you know not all AVIs are created equally. Getting ALL the info may point us in the right direction.

Use the freebie MediaInfo s/w from here: https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

It has helped many of us on the COW to assist others.

Cheers,

Is there a specific type of AVI that you know off the top of your head that won't work with SVP13, and the solution for this?

[Freddy Rodriguez] "Is there a specific type of AVI "
An AVI is only the wrapper. It’s what’s inside that counts. If you use MediaInfo that will spring the DATA for us to see.

OK, I’ve not seen a Blackmagic 8 bit MJPEG Codec wrapped in an AVI. Maybe Vegas is having an issue with that. BTW, you don’t have the Video Track muted?

I believe the footage is from a hidden camera of sorts, like a nanny-cam for spying on the nanny. The camera might have been the size of a golf ball. The video, when played back on VLC player, seems to be handheld but coming from inside a toy or something. If the footage says something about a BlackMagic camera, then I will guess it's one of those cube size cameras, like the GoPro.

[Freddy Rodriguez] "Graham, have you edited video before?"
Once or twice. But over the short time I’ve been shooting and editing I keep my captured Media as simple as possible. Mike knows this 😉.

I’ve done some research on this BM CODEC for you. Very interesting thread for you to consider here on the Official Vegas Forum. It’s written by some of chaps that have helped me. This thread goes back 10years. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-8-0b-and-blackmagic-i...

I have a copy of Blackmagic's free software, DaVinci Resolve. It has the same issue: it ingests the footage but shows up blank in the preview window. Audio is fine.

I'm calling it, guys. Time of death: midnight. I don't want to keep the client waiting. I'll let them know my software wasn't playing nice with their footage, and lose the sale. Looks like it's dumpster diving again this week for food 😢 (sad violin music)

I'd like to thank everyone who offered help. Graham, too!
