Question about mp4 file (corrupt sd card)
on Jun 17, 2018 at 9:34:11 pm

My card shows an 18 gb big 4k mp4 file but it wont play in any media player. It says the file exists but doesn't seem to have any video. Vegas isn't letting me drag it in either. Any solution? I'm guessing a converter?

Hi Derek

We will need more info about what's on the card. Was the material recorded directly on that card ? If so, what was used to record it.
Was it copied from another media ? Can you see the file structure on your PC... or do you have a Apple ?

It would (in theory) help us to know what kind of MP4 is on the card (yes, there are different ones. MP4 is only a container)

Cheers !

It was filmed on an a7sii 4k 24p XAVC-S codec 100mbit/s recorded directly on the card - a sandisk extreme pro 64. All other files show the preview thumbnail of a video frame however this clip just shows an mp4 logo thumbnail, but says the file size is around 18gigs... The clip was in the middle of the file sequence, as in the card let me record more clips after this one was corrupted - I tried converting it with the freeware FormatFactory and recieved an error. I've dragged it to an external hard drive, and desktop too. Still had an error. Here is the error readout from Pot Player Media player upon attempting playback.

If the file was recorded on a7sii, can you play it back on the camera? If not, it's corrupted for some reason (recording error?). I had a similar case where my Sony handycam AX100 could not find any playable file on the SD card although a file with an MP4 extension was indeed there. Luckily I was able to copy the file to my PC but none of the applications, NLE's or converters I had on the PC, could open the file. I looked for rescue info for a couple of days and, finally the following site gave me the solution. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply - I went to the link fix you sent - I went through all the steps. It worked. Thank you so much -
Best advice I could give to anyone else wanting to try this -
Command Prompt was confusing to operate at first with changing the directory and all with having to type cd
You must have a space where needed, and use ctrl C to copy and Ctrl V to paste the commands. There's no left and right clicking.
You must use your arrow keys. Also, if anything seems like it's repetitive while command prompt is loading ...if anything is being written in there, just let it keep doing it's thing. There were often times it would have some codes and say things like file doesn't exist and "0 bytes" and "no name" "not enough frames" - etc. just bad things like that made me almost give up, but out of nowhere in the bin folder, it created an MOV file around the same size as the original corrupted.
If you come across this problem and get stuck please reply to this thread and I will definitely talk you through the steps. The poster above me saved me a lot of great footage.

The MOV file that was created plays back glitchy in Vegas - I'm starting a new thread to show the problem.
I've converted the mov file back to mp4, the file size went from 19gig to 2 gigs... but is still 4k. Hmmm...
Either way thank you for the fix!

Glad to hear that it worked for you too. (That site saved me from losing an invaluable video file of approx. 90GB.) I am just thankful to the original poster for making his excellent salvaging utility available.

I just saw your new thread but, for continuation, I add here. I am not sure whether or not you had tried anything on the SD card directly BEFORE you copied the corrupted file to your PC for fix. As the IMPORTANT NOTE on the recovery site says, it is indeed "the less modifications you do on your storage media that holds damaged video file(s), the higher the chance for recovery!" So, depending on how badly corrupted the video file was on the SD card, the current state of your recovered file might be as good as it could get. If it's not too late, you might want to try digital forensics... I suggest that you take a look at the comment of "9. Arch" further down in the comment section of the recovery site I referred to.

It's strange... The file has been recovered. - but it will only play correctly in VLC and Potplayer.
the same .mov and h264 file (same size) both play wrong and glitchy in Vegas preview.

Then it's more likely that VEGAS Pro has the (decoding) problem. Why not try to convert the recovered mov (and h264) file to a more VEGAS friendly format to see if it cures the problem?

I've converted them to an mp4 and it lowered the file size from 19gb to 2gb. I'm guessing it lowered the bitrate a ton because the video breaks up easily in the shadows and colors and such.
I've used the freeware program Factoryformat and just chose the default highest quality mp4 conversion. I wonder if there's a better program to make sure I get the same exact 4k and bitrate as recorded

For converter, I suggest that you try Sony's Catalyst Browser (free).

I'm in Catalyst browse I have the export settings the same everything other than wondering why I cant have a "no crop" option it only allows me to choose letterbox, cinemascope, or center crop.

Also, Along with the crop issue, there's no option to render the same 24p - it only has options for 30 and 60p

I don't own a7sii and had never worked on 24p footage, so I downloaded a sample a7sii 4K 24p footage from VIMEO, and loaded the file onto Catalyst Browse.

In the transcode setting, I see 24p (& 23.976p) along with 30p, 50p and 60p for 3840 x 2160 resolution. I also see "no crop" option as below.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/me45niore2dd71u/Transcode%20%20-%20Framerate.jpg?...
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ibao7c32geb86ft/Transcode%20to%20Crop%20Type.jpg?...

Are you sure that your recovered footage has the same resolution and the frame rate as those of the original footage? Check the file with MediaInfo.
