Can't get Vegas 15 to see external monitor
on Oct 29, 2017 at 3:58:02 pm

Hi. I have been using Sony Vegas for a few years now. My machine has Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) and I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 Graphics card. I have been using Sony Vegas 13 with no problem and that includes my main monitor connected with a DVI connector and my second monitor (used as my preview monitor in Vegas) connected with HDMI.

Today I upgraded to Sony Vegas 15 and everything works except that now Sony Vegas cannot see my second monitor. When I click on the "Video Preview on External Monitor" button nothing happens. I have right clicked to look at the "Preview Device Preferences" tab and have no ability to select a second monitor -- no options for that appear.

What is odd is that Windows 7 Professional most definitely can "see" this second monitor. I can drag my mouse so that the cursor moves from one monitor to the other. I can even drag my opened Sony Vegas project to the other monitor and I can see it there if I so choose. Additionally, I kept Vegas 13 on my machine "just in case" and so have both Vegas 13 and my newly installed Vegas 15 on my drive. So I tried going back to the old Vegas 13 and it opened up just fine and when I clicked on the "Video Preview on External Monitor" button then my display goes to the second monitor without a problem. So, as far as I can see, the problem lies with Vegas 15 and not Vegas 13 or Windows 7. As it stands now, Windows 7 can see my second monitor, Vegas 13 can see my second monitor, and Vegas 15 CAN'T see my second monitor. Any suggestions please?

Well, as a "temporary" fix, I undocked my preview window and dragged it over to the second monitor, and enlarged it so that it "mostly" fills the screen. It seems to work okay.....however, if anyone can figure out the problem as I stated it in my first post, I would be very appreciative. Thanks.

VP15 Build 216 working on both monitors here. In Prefs I can see this:
What aren't you seeing? When you click Identify Displays, what don't you get?

Hi Graham, and thanks so much for replying. Please excuse the quality of the image I show you here -- a quick snap with my cell phone has a lot of moire (just ignore the moire), but it shows you very clearly what I see -- and what I do not see.

As you can see I do not even have the option of choosing from various devices -- that part of the window is simply blank.

I found a much older post...I think dated from 2013, from a gentleman who had the exact same problem. He even posted an image identical to what you see. Someone chatted with him about it but the thread simply ended and no final solution was posted.

Well, I’m not giving up.

Please check which version of .Net Framework you’re running.

Well, thanks for not giving up. So far just having the preview monitor dragged over to the other monitor is working well. But I checked and I have Version 4.0

nVidia Driver update? Does your card recognize or list the 2nd Monitor?

When you Boot-Up, which Monitor does the BIOS Info start on? That should be your Main Monitor. I have Vegas on my Main Monitor. You could try swapping the Monitors around. And yes, why when it was working before? I don't rightly know.

Thanks again, Graham. My bios and everything start up on the monitor on the "left" which is my main monitor. And remember, I still have Vegas 13 on my computer and it still works fine with the second monitor (which is placed on the right). I just checked it again. But with Vegas 15 -- no. However, with Vegas 15 I am quite satisfied with simply dragging the preview window over to my second monitor and enlarging it and using it there (I never really looked at the preview window on the main monitor, anyway -- I looked only at my second monitor when checking the footage or editing it -- that's the way I work).

Since I am swamped with other work and I am satisfied with my "work around," I think I will leave it at that. But thank you very much for your time and I will post here if I ever find a solution to the problem.

If you’re truly satisfied, then my work here is done ✅ 😉.

I know this is a few months old, but could you please tell me how you undocked the preview window? I have Vegas Pro 15 as well, and since I have my 3 monitors set up through surround, I basically have one big screen, 5760x1080. When I click on "Video Preview for External Monitor", the preview goes full screen in the center monitor. Since Windows, and Vegas, think I have one big monitor of 5760x1080, the external monitor button obviously will not work. So I need to be able to undock it and move it to another monitor. I know I can remove the surround so that I have 3 independent monitors, but I really like the surround mode better. Can you help?

Thanks, Marc.

Hi Marc,

Since it was a few months ago I find it hard to remember. However, I believe it involves clicking and holding the preview tab (not a button but a tab) at the bottom left of preview window and then drag down directly. Trying to move it in another direction will not work. One downward motion should do it. All I can remember specifically is that undocking the window/panel is different than in previous versions of Vegas, such as Vegas 13.

I hope this helps!

Install .NET Framework 4.6.2. It's required by Vegas Pro 14/15 for a couple of things including that.

[Nick Hope] "Install .NET Framework 4.6.2. It's required by Vegas Pro 14/15 for a couple of things including that."
Over time this M$ “catch” has hobbled many of us. It’s my gleaning of anecdotal evidence that points towards even an incremental update - our friend here has .NET 4 - maybe or just isn’t enough. The example here is of a Vegas User who is “content” to employ this workaround just so he’s able to go full screen with the Internal Preview. You and I know the value of utilising an external monitor. It’s a pity that this “creative” workaround is being employed for just a large Preview. I couldn’t cope without my external Q&A monitoring.

OK, the experience of other users surely points towards a crucial and urgent WARNING by MAGIX to have a pre-install audit purposefully pointing out to the person installing that the .NET Framework is EITHER, reassuringly, up to date OR that the present .NET Framework is Version X.XX and needs to be updated. I say this because I’ve only clumsily stumbled on this as a result of another 3rd Party software informing me that my then .NET Framework was needing to be updated, for their s/w to work.

This has caught so many people out that I feel some official MAGIX warning/suggestion, at the point of installation, would not be an unreasonable suggestion/request.

Graham,

This is from a few months ago but I want to thank you for the additional info regarding .NET Framework. Yes, it is something MAGIX should tell their customers.

John
