Vegas 13 two hour MPEG2 render creating huge file

Hi all, long time no post, but I always get and appreciate the awesome help here.

So, I've edited a 3 hour video (HD footage shot on Mini DV Sony cam) down to about 2 hours and 20 minutes and want to burn a couple of Blu-rays before burning some DVDs.

When I use the usual workflow of rendering audio as .ac3 and video as MPEG2 I'm running into a huge problem with the file size of the rendered MPEG2. It's ending up as 24.4 GB and this is too large to burn onto a Blu-ray.

I suspected that the still images I have incorporated (about 28 of them) may be too large, but I checked and these files are about 180 KB each.

What could be happening to make the rendered MPEG2 so large? Any ideas, please?

Thanks, as always.

What bitrate are you using? Try reducing it. Personally I'd use mpeg4 (AVC) not mpeg2.

Not completely sure. Will check. Thanks for the reply.

Or, if you want to stay with mpeg2 you could always use DL 50gb Blue-ray discs. The size limit on Single layer is about 23.1GB.

Thanks for the reply. Will look into that.

I would recommend rendering out as MP4...

Steve, don't mean to hijack this thread, but did Irma wreak havoc in your neck of the woods?

Hi Kevin,

What program are you using to author the disc? If it is DVDA, you may want to try MPEG2 max 27,000,000, avg 23,000,000, min 18,000,000 bitrates, which may squeeze you through.

BTW, I'm just curious, "So, I've edited a 3 hour video (HD footage shot on Mini DV Sony cam)", how did you get HD from a Mini DV?

You may want to download a bitrate calculator for bluray, here is one for MPEG2 http://dvd-hq.info/bitrate_calculator.php

Hi George, I am using DVDA. Will try those limits.
I use a Sony HVR-A1P which shoots HD on Mini DV tapes.
Tried an MP4 render but render froze after about seven hours.

Hi Kevin,

Does your Sony camera record HD 1920x1080 (x1.0) or HDV 1440x1080 (x1.33333)? Not that it makes any difference for your issue, again just curious.

If I'm not mistaken DVDA will re-render an mp4, which will just make a bigger mess of your production, so I would stick with MPEG2 and use a bitrate calculator to get it all to fit.
