Movie Studio Platinum can't read some AVI files
on Aug 19, 2017 at 4:49:17 am

Hello! Can you help me?

I picked up an HD video camera that produces AVI files.
I tried to import the AVI files into my Sony Movie Studio program.
it shows black on the screen for the whole video.
The audio is fine.
VLC will play the AVI file.

Maybe because the camera is new, the AVI files it produces have a codec that Move Studio doesn't recognize???

How can I fix this?

Thanks
gary in Vermont

[gary beckwith] "I picked up an HD video camera that produces AVI files."
Make and model number of the Movie camera would help?

What was your method? Was this directly into your PC? What did you use to Capture?

Did the camera come with a CD? Did you install any software that was required? Check with the camera manufacturer to see if they have drivers that need to be installed with the camera that contain the required codecs.

You might want to download GSpot 2.70a and drop the AVI file on it and it will tell you what codec it uses and if the codec is installed. If it is not, go to the manufacturers web site for that codec and installed it.

One thing to be aware of is that Movie Studio uses Video for Windows (VFW) codecs and not DirectShow codecs so there may be a DirectShow codec installed but Movie Studio can't use it because it uses older VFW technology. Also very odd that a modern HD camera would use an older AVI wrapper. Maybe it uses the CineForm codec? That was an HD AVI codec if I remember correctly.

Hello, thanks for answering! the model of the camera is

Naxa HD camera NDC-405
it is a cheap knockoff of a GoPro

I record on the camera, and simply copy/paste the AVI file from the camera on to the PC. Then I load it into Movie Studio. It creates an audio and video track on the timeline.... the audio is fine. the video is blacked out.

any advice is appreciated!

[gary beckwith] "Naxa HD camera NDC-405"
That camera shoots Motion JPEG (MJPEG), 1280 x 720 @ 30 fps. Movie Studio should be able to playback M-JPEG natively but that's the codec that you need to view the video.
