Image slightly cropped, but only on TV in file format!

My short film has the titles close to the edge, which appear as they should be in Sony Vegas, on Film Freeway, and on burned DVD. But if I render put one of the AVCHD 1920x1080 files onto a memory stick and watch it on my TV, the titles are just over the edge of the frame. The file on Film Freeway is the same as the file on my TV that looks different. I've tried adjusting my TV settings, but it doesn't make any difference.
Could someone please explain what's going on?

What's going on is you didn't keep your titles within the Title Safe area. You cannot print to the end of the video because TV standards do not allow this. There is an Action Safe area and a smaller Title Safe area and your titles need to be within the smaller box. TV Manufactures aren't required to show anything outside the Action Safe area. Every TV is different. There are no guarantees. Welcome to the broadcast industry! 😉

In Vegas Pro, above the Preview windows, turn on Safe Areas in the Overlay button. That will show you where your titles need to be within to guarantee that they will be seen on every TV.

Justin, all TVs do that. Like John said, that's what the safe areas or for.

Have fun!

Called overscan. Some TVs, like my Panasonic, have an option to switch it off. But then I get unwanted extra image around the edge especially a dotted line in the top left with some SD broadcasts and DVDs.

Thanks John. I remember this now when I used Avid 10 years ago. The safe areas seem quite extreme! The title safe area too much so. The film came out of two ideas, one being BIG titles, nearly touching the edge of the screen. I guess technology dictates what we can or should do sometimes. I'm tempted to go into a TV shop and try the film out on every make of TV.

Well... BIG is "relative" and the "edge of the screen" is the Action Safe area. So making your titles fill the Action Safe area will make them bigger than normal and guaranteed to be completely seen on all TV's.

You will see a variety of results. Some worse than others. TV manufactures use varying degrees of overscan which is why editors are instructed to stay within the Action Safe areas.
