.MOV files plays fine with VLC, but only shows multiple audio files in Vegas
on Mar 14, 2017 at 1:22:19 pm

Hi. I have Vegas 14.0 Pro and came across something new. Someone sent me a .MOV file that I need to edit. It's a little odd, it seems, and it only plays in VLC, not any other player I have.

When I put it on a track in Vegas, only 16 audio files show up - no video. The 1st 2 audio files show the exact same audio track, and the other 14 tracks are blank.

Is there something I can do so that I can "see" and edit the video portion as well? I don't see it at all. Thanks for any advice.

You need to run "media info" and post the results for the max amount of help here.

It's a shareware program. So no charge unless you want to donate.

This usually happens when you don't have the QuickTime codec installed that the file requires. VLC ships with it's own codecs and does not rely on system codecs. Vegas Pro uses the system's QuickTime codecs so you need to determine what codec the file uses and install it.

As Paul said, MediaInfo can tell you what codec the file needs as will the QuickTime Player under the Inspector menu.

Here is a screenshot of MediaInfo. I have Quicktime 7.7.9 already installed. There are no updates and the download updates say QT 7 is no longer supported for Windows.

The clip PLAYS in VLC but not in QT. When I try to play it in QT, it says it needs a file but the webpage that opens up is an error message from Apple. When using QT, I hear the audio but no video.

Here is the screenshot:

If it won't play in QuickTime Player then it won't play in Vegas Pro because Vegas uses QuickTime to decode the movie. The only exception is Vegas Pro 14 and the ProRes codec but all other codecs require QuickTime.

MediaInfo shows that it's an MPEG4 file so it's odd that the QuickTime Player won't play it because it supports AVC/H.264 MPEG4.

In the QuickTime Player, go to Windows | Show Movie Inspector and see what codec QuickTime thinks it's using.

That's what's weird. The file has a .MOV extension.

That screen shot tells the whole story: Your problem is that the file uses the Apple Intermediate Codec which is not supported on Windows.

Apple Intermediate Codec is an old intermediary format used by Apple but is no longer popular in favor of Apple ProRes codec. Find someone with a Mac to convert it to Apple ProRes 422 for you (or even MPEG4 AVC/H.264) and you should be fine. In fact, perhaps the person who sent it to you might be able to do this for you if they have a Mac.

I got access to a Mac. What application do I use to convert this file to something viewable on a PC? Thanks.

Hello? Can anyone recommend how I can convert the file? Do I have to do it on a Mac, and if so, what application do I use? I opened it on a Mac using Quicktime, but I can't save it into another format unless I purchase QT Pro (it seems).

Is there an app I can download on Windows that will convert it? Thanks for any help out there.

[John Lee] "Do I have to do it on a Mac"
Yes, the Apple Intermedia Codec is only available on a Mac.
[John Lee] "and if so, what application do I use?"
MPEG Streamclip or Apple Compressor are probably the two that most people would use. The former is free while the latter can be found in the Apple App Store for $49.
[John Lee] "Is there an app I can download on Windows that will convert it? "
Nope.

MPEG Streamclip should be able to convert it to MPEG4 for you.
