Damaged GoPro file won't open in Vegas 12 or 13

Hi;

Sometimes the last segment of a GoPro recording (Hero 3+ Silver 1080 60p) won't open in Vegas. In the past I've been able to open it in VLC and save/convert the damaged segment to the H264 in MP4 container and then I can import it into Vegas. One clue that I will have the problem even before I try to import it is that Windows 7 will not show the thumbnail. MPC-HC and VLC play it fine.

Tonight my VLC trick did not work.

I suspect the damaged file was lacking an EOF or something. For the converted file, I suspect a codec problem.

Here's what MPC-HC reports as the properties of the VLC converted file:

Any help greatly appreciated. The file is the last segment of a paragliding flight from my helmet mounted GoPro, so I't cant be easily re-shot!

The GoPro Studio program caused huge problems on my Windows 7 machine. I forget what they were - I had to struggle for days to excise it from my system. It broke other programs in a very subtle way and was a total cluster foxtrot. I think it was related to the codecs it installed. It's never going back on my computer.

I can open the damaged file fine in lots of players, just not in Vegas.

This software will "fix" it so that it at least can be imported, but the resultant file has dropouts, stutter, other problems.

Maybe you can open your file in Handbrake and then convert it !

I think I need to try Handbrake, have read about it, but never used it.

Do you know if it can provide a missing EOF?

Thanks,

Stev

You could use Handbrake just to grab what you need i.e. cut and render out a section of video.

I do recommend running MalwareByte's AntiMalware afterwards. I did notice severe performance issues on my machine after installing Handbrake, like Handbrake would load or would not close after loading, PC became unresponsive, task manager would not run. Malwarebytes found some nasties lurking in my system and removed them. I still use handbrake without issues now. It might have been a huge coincidence or I had something pre-existing on my system already that really upset Handbrake. All other programs otherwise ran fine, including Vegas.

My system specs: Intel i7 970, GTX570, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 12 (x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6
