I'm Pimping my PC, need your advice please! Rx480 6700K?

Hi Guys

I've been using Vegas for many years but my PC is OLD!

Its currently
My PC with a
i7 sandy bridge 2600 1155 socket - 3.4-3.8ghz
on a p8h67-M
16gb 2000mhz
EVO840 SSD 256GB boot drive
AMD Radeon HD 5570 650mhz, 1Gb
can't handle 4K footage in Sony Vegas,

question 1 - Should I upgrade this system as its a fairly decent processor. with rx 480, higher psu?

Or new build I was thinking

  • i7 6700K
  • RX 480 strix
  • BE QUIET! BK013 Shadow Rock 2 Heatsink & Fan All Intel & AMD Sockets Silent Wings Fan - (Components > Cooling Fans Modding)

  • G-Skill Ripjaws 4 F4-3000C15Q-32GRK 32 GB (8 GB x 4) Kit DDR4 3000 MHz Non-ECC Memory Module with Heat Spreader - Black
  • Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB 2.5 inch Solid State Drive
  • Corsair CP-9020015-UK Builder Series CX750 ATX/EPS 80 PLUS Bronze Power Supply Unit, 750 W
  • Windows 10 Pro 64bit
  • MSI Intel LGA1151 Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon DDR4 ATX Motherboard
  • Samsung U28E590D 28-Inch 4K LED Monitor (3840 x 2160, UHD, 1 ms)

Question 2, what do you think of this build?
I'm presuming the RX 480 will be good for vegas but I haven't seen any direct videos, I see its pretty good with premier which is the other editing program I like to use.

Are there alternatives you'd recommend for a better price/performance? Once my builds complete I'll happily upload some performance videos and show my results for anyone elses reference ?

Cheers Dave

I'm partial to six core i7 for video editing -- I'd start with an i7-6800K and go from there.

Hi David,

If your budget doesn't have room for an 8 core as Ole suggest, then I would lean on at least a 6 core as Paul suggest.

I'm using the i7-6800K (Asus 99A-II board), SSD, 68 GB Ram R9-380. It is fine for 1080p, and handles 4K, but by no means is it a 4K box. When I put this build together I had absolutely no intentions of shooting 4K. 3 months later I picked up a 4K camera!!! We often don't know, what we don't know, and at the time I was convinced I wasn't going 4K! I was wrong about myself. You may know yourself better, but beware, if you have the budget and can get an 8 core, you will never look back. Just my personal opinion. I'm good with what I have, but if I had any idea back then, I would have dumped the extra money for an 8 core box.

Best Regards......George

X99 and a 5930k would be better than a Skylake based system. Mainly due to the board design having 4 channels of memory interfacing.

Buy a motherboard that has the least DPC scores, there is a benchmark for this on Anandtech. Low DPC will make a difference for smooth operation/playback.

Max out out AMD GPU with most "Compute Units" not stream processors you can afford. That would pretty much mean an XT Class GPU chip with the R9-Fury X still being the superior card for 8-bit video work. The newer RX card have pretty much less everything, memory bandwidth, and GFLOP performance being the main things. W9100 if you want 10bit display abilities.

Get 32 or 64GB of RAM, and make sure to get the density of DIMMs to fill only the dual channel interfaces on the board. For an X99, that would be like 4 DIMM modules.

Get an NVMe M.2 for Boot

Get a PCIe based NVME SSD Card for project work, and use spinning disks only for project holding space. Put the PCIe SSD in the slots that hang off the CPU and not the X99 bridge.

Convert camera high compression media to an intermediate format like Cineform, Prores, X-AVC-Intra, HDCAM, or XDCAM (for HD) The camera original formats have a large over head to decompress, and put together the group of pictures back into sequence.

Skylake is not the best at the moment, and we are still waiting on the x99 class board and chip for the Gen6 or 7 CPUs that compare in design.

Great post Aaron .. lots to chew on .. I'm thinking of an 8 core build in the next few months .. just starting to think about it. I never heard of some of the stuff you mentioned.

Thanks for the post.

Hi Aron,

I'm using Vegas Pro 14 and surching for the optimal PC System ...
(I think magix didn't changed anything about performance specs in comparison to 13 ...)

Wich componets are you using, and wich are your experience with realtime playback stuttering images while using blend/wipe effects and/or more than one video layers ...
Does your system play back a 4K Video out of the cam (like mxf xavc) fluently
also if there is a blendeffect maybe a simple crossfade
(or if you use more than one VFX like "colorcorrection curves") ??

Best regards

Tobi

I'm seriously considering going the Mac route like John Rofrano did and buying a souped-up Mac, use it just for Vegas, my Windows Machine for everything else I need to do in my IT hell-world.

Hmm, you have to install Windows on a Mac computer if you want to use Vegas Pro
