H264 support in Vegas 14
on Oct 27, 2016 at 7:23:58 pm

Occasionally I receive files from clients that are .mov that are problematic in Vegas 13. I can see the audio waveform but no video meaning the codec isn't supported by Vegas. When I drop them into premier I can see that they are H264 .mp4 with a .mov wrapper. Does anyone know if Vegas 14 has better support for H264. This gets to be a real hassle after a while. Thanks

thanks

Do you have QuickTime for Windows installed? If not, Vegas Pro 13 and earlier cannot work with the files. Vegas Pro 14 added native support for reading QuickTime files so it doesn't need to have QuickTime for Windows installed. So yes, Vegas Pro 14's support for QuickTime is better.

Yeah, but what happen when you are a Pro editor, and the Television station requires all content
submitted to them be in .mov format or another flavor of the Quicktime format to go on air!
That's what i'm faced with daily.... So given that particular situation, Quicktime has to be installed
to output all those tasks a broadcast house requires.

Yes I have QuickTime 7 installed. I can drop most .mov files on Vegas timeline but then I get some that will only show the audio. As a matter of fact the recent files I am referring to won't play in QuickTime player or MPEG streamclip. But they are fine in premier. What version are you guys running?

What codec does the QuickTime file contain? I believe that Vegas Pro (any version) cannot display ProRes 4444 no matter what you do.

Open the file with QuickTime Player and use the Inspector Windows (Ctrl+I) to see what video codec it's using. If it's ProRes 4444 you are out of luck.

Let's us know what it uses.

QuickTime 7 will not play it. Premier identifies it as a mp4 but I don't see any other information other than hd 1920x1080 29.97.

[Jon Muro] "QuickTime 7 will not play it. "
Since Vegas Pro 13 and earlier use QuickTime, there is no way that Vegas Pro can play it if QuickTime can't play it.

I would download the trial of Vegas Pro 14 and see if it fixes your problem.

If you want to post a clip to DropBox or something, I'd be happy to see if it plays in Vegas Pro 14 for you.

At some point you have to face the fact that most of the industry professionals are using a Mac and if you want to be compliant you should use one too. This is one of the reason's I moved to the Mac. I have no problem sending ProRes 422 MOV files to broadcast stations from Final Cut Pro X. It's a simple matter of using the tool that is compatible with everyone else's tool. Why fight it? This has nothing to do with Vegas Pro being Pro or not. It's about collaborating with other professionals using compatible tools and formats.

John,

I was looking and came across this file that Apple seems to have removed for Windows. I found it via the waybackmachine here: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2?locale=en_US'>https://web.archive.org/web/20160118025707/https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2?locale=en_US

Would this work with Vegas users if they can find the installer? I found this reference from SCS: https://www.custcenter.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5032/~/does-vegas-pro-wo...

I'm not sure if this would allow the ProRes 422 MOV files/

That link doesn't work for me but if you are talking about the separate ProRes installer, it was removed because it got included into the regular QuickTime for Windows installer so it's no longer needed. That ProRes installer only gave you the ability to read ProRes. If you install the latest QuickTime for Windows you will have everything that was released for Windows by Apple including the ability to read ProRes formats up to the time that it was discontinued.

I downloaded a trial version of Vegas 14 to see if the files would import but the same thing happened. Just audio shows up on the timeline.

The files I have been sent from Hong Kong were shot with a JVC camera in .mov format. Last time I received files like this I transcoded them with the JVC Pro HD Clip Manager. But last time they sent me the SD cards. This time they Dropbox them to me. As a result the transcoder will not import them as it doesn't see an SD card. I have been transcoding them with Adobe media encoder into mpeg 4 which is working out fine. I guess JVC has it's own codec inside that .mov wrapper? Anyone else have this problem with JVC .mov files and vegas ?
Incidentally, if you record mpeg 4 with this camera (and I'm sorry I don't know which camera it is) they work in vegas just fine.

Thank you guys for trying to help with this. Looks like I found the workaround, hassle that it is.

Hi Jon,

If transcoding .mp4 clips for the purpose of editing them, I would not transcode to .mp4 (H.264) as that is a lossy format. I'd be using a high-quality intermediate such as Cineform or DNxHD which are both available in Premiere/Media Encoder CC if that is what you are using to transcode.

The GoPro Cineform codec is available under the QuickTime format, or choose DNxHD MXF format.

Thanks

Thanks Jeff for your input. Not too sure it matters so much in this case as it all gets bumped down to 480p. Good to know though, I did not realize it was a lossy format.
Appreciated.

[Jon Muro] " I guess JVC has it's own codec inside that .mov wrapper? Anyone else have this problem with JVC .mov files and vegas ?"
This is very typical of JVC in general. They tend to go off on their own and use proprietary formats that no one else does which makes them incompatible. I've seen it happen for years now and for this reason I would NEVER buy a JVC camera. If you gave me one, I'd sell it on eBay and buy a Sony or Panasonic. JVC will tell you that they are being progressive, leading the industry in new directions, but they are just causing headaches for their consumers leading them in circles by being incompatible. So I'm not surprised at all by this. As I said, it's been happening for years. JVC = non-standard.

Check these out, I use them quite often.

http://hypedphoto.com/ezencoder.cfm

I HAVE had an anti-virus find a false-positive issue with these, but they are fine and very useful.
There are loss-less versions that may get you to a format that is better to use.

Good luck
