Using MSP 12 on w7 PC

When editing large video files ... after dropping media onto time line I start cutting it up using split & delete etc.

However when there are a large number of segments it would be good to be able to name them ......... currently if I split them all segments on same track have same name (the media file name)

I know you can use markers but they are fixed to timeline not to event, I want to name to each event will then make sorting event clip easier as I progress with edit.

Can this be done ? is there an event marker or tag facility ?

I know I could more every slit to a new track but that would be unwieldy.

It sounds like your workflow could benefit from using SubClips. Instead of editing on the Timeline, you should use Open in Trimmer on your long clips and then set your In and Out points in the Trimmer and press the Create SubClip button and give it a name. A new clip will show up in your Project Media with that name and just the parts between the In and Out point. Then assemble your timeline from just these SubClips and when you use View | Active Take Information (Ctrl+Shift+I) you will see the name that you gave the SubClip. I believe this is the behavior you are looking for.

Yea, that's what the Trimmer is for. You should be trimming your clips with the trimmer and then inserting them into the Timeline as needed (even if you don't create subclips).

Been using this program for a couple of years .. never used trimmer .. always just put media file direct onto timeline and edited there.

I think this way of working came from following a few basic tutorials that just go straight to timeline.

Just tried it on one video and it does what I wanted to achieve ... thanks.

Great! I'm glad that provided a solution. I know a low of people (including myself) just throw video onto the timeline and start cutting it up and as long as you have a manageable amount of video it works well. But when you really need to weed through good shots and bad shots and catalog what you want to use, the Trimmer is a better workflow.
