How can mp4 be 640 x 480?
on Mar 19, 2015 at 3:27:05 am

I shot video clip and captured it to my hard drive.

It shows as mp4 but when I checked the properties, it says 640 x 480 frame size?

How does that happen? I thought mp4 was HDef and would be 1480 x 1080?

Assuming I am correct about mp4 being high def., I'm guessing that it might have ended up at the 640 x 480 due to incorrect settings when capturing it?

I know on my camcorder you specify high def or standard so maybe I had it set to standard def by mistake this the 640x 480 but I am confused why it also is listed as mp4?

When looking at the clip in SONY MS it does not fill the frame and has black edge. there was an adjustment that I was able to do whereby I set the clip to 1.333 and it filled more of the frame but there still was some black edges.

SO I assume I have it as Standard def due to 640x480 but how can it also be mp4? Uh unless I am mistaken and mp4 is standard def?

MPEG4 is a very broad codec standard. It's so broad that no manufacturer supports all of the parts of the specification. It can be standard def, or high def, a thumbnail video. MPEG4 really doesn't care what size you make your video, it will encode it. Many smart phones use MP4 at very small frame sizes. So your assumption was incorrect. While MP4 can be HD, it can be almost any other size you want as well.

It sounds like your camera as on a SD setting. There's not much you can do about that now. Lesson learned.

OK John, thanks.

It's also possible, that I shot in H def but when capturing to my computer, had the capture setting on standard def. I am familiar with the fact that the capture setting can be determined by the camcorder settings.

SO, once I find the original mini-dv tape, I'll be able to tell if the original footage was shot in 1440x180 or 640x480.

IF it was shot in 1440x1080, all I would have to do is recapture it with the correct hdef setting

IF it's 640x480 in original footage, I can just reshoot it as the place is just down the road.

Thanks!

I'm not sure how you got an MP4 from an HDV camera. They record HD 1440x1080 MPEG2 or SD 720x480 DV25 to tape. Neither format is 640x480. Let us know how you make out.
