BCC UpRes doesn't like me
on Feb 1, 2015 at 12:35:07 am

I have an SD clip I want to use in my HD project.

The source clip is Main Comcept MPEG 2 interlaced and has the following properties:

You can see that the original pixel aspect ratio is 1.4568 ..... However, when I get to the UpRes Source menu where I will select that original PAR, it's not on the drop down menu. Closest is 1.42 or 1.5.

Any ideas why this is so and what real effect it has overall not being able to match it exactly...?

cheers,

Nick... BASE1268

Since your footage is PAL Widescreen you should use the 1.42 (PAL Widescreen) setting. Vegas Pro uses aspect ratios that no other NLE uses so the fact that they don't match doesn't surprise me.

I'm having a weird issue with UpRes.

I follow your tutorial step by step... and as we've established I can only select 1.42 PAR from the UpRes source menu.

Then I go to the Transform tab and change the 'X' with a view to having the video expand just far enough to fill the frame, but it stops short of the frame width leaving very thin black stripes on either side

Any ideas please...?

Source is 720 x 576 x 32 MPEG-2
PAR of 1.4568 (PAL DV Widescreen)

Try doing the opposite of what my tutorial recommends for PAR settings. Try it again, but this time leave the PAR of the video at 1.4568 and set the PAR in UpRez at 1.0. This might correct the black bars. I'm assuming this is a PAR problem with UpRez not supporting Vegas' use of 1.4568.

I got it running as it should... turns out it wasn't your suggestion... but rather my inexperience at ensuring the project properties PAR matched the change to Square pixels in the clip properties.

Somehow the project properties changed from my initial settings to match those of the clip when I brought it into the new project... (???)

Anyways... now I've been able to use it I don't really get the benefit I'm looking for... I'd hoped the UpRez would take care of the aliasing you can see in this screen grab which doesn't change at all with any of the quality menu choices even cranked all the way up to 100 on the slider scale.

This is from the timeline preview window (no zoom on the clip)

So... I'm obviously looking for a way to get this clip to look at least as good as it does originally but inside my HD project.

Is there a way...?

It's only 3 seconds long but stands out from the rest big time... well it does to me...lol

I really can't see because you've uploaded a very small image. You don't have to resize images for the COW. Upload the full rez HD image and the COW will create a smaller one for the post linked to the full size to show people.

If the aliasing you are talking about if from DV video, try using DV Fixer which is also part of the Image Restoration Unit. It should smooth out the "jaggies" on DV video.

Oh... that's odd... on my window there is a large photo placed between the text.

I click on the link to upload a non-resized screen grab from my desktop (made with the 'snipping tool' ) and then copy the embed code to the message so when I post it appears as described, but you say it's coming up really small when you open the thread...???

[Nick McMahon] "but you say it's coming up really small when you open the thread...???"
Yes this is what it says at the bottom when I click on the image to open it:

529x309 • image/png

I was expecting 1920x1080 since you are UpRezing.

Ooops.... forgive my lack of understanding... but I was under the impression that if I use the windows 7 'snipping tool' to take a screen grab it resizes to the measurements of the pixels used...?

Right... I'll use the 'save screenshot' in vegas and that should then give you a true representation of the HD frame that I used...

...which btw was 1280 x 720... or would I be better to use a 1080 frame because I'm about to introduce the last 30 seconds of clips which were shot in Dubai at 1080 and my thoughts were to render in 1080 and bring the earlier montage of 720 footage up to the bigger frame rather than downsize the 1080 to fit a 720 frame...?

I would render in the format that you have the most footage of. This way less footage will be scaled.

[John Rofrano] "I would render in the format that you have the most footage of. This way less footage will be scaled"

That's logical... so therefore it matters not which direction the scaling happens in terms of output quality...?

I'm probably going to end up with about a 60/40 split of 720/1080.

BTW... I got a sync licence approved gratis from the 4 different copyright holders of the music track, so now it's time to get the project completed and published.

Well, it does. Downscaling is always going to look better than upscaling because you are trowing away information rather than trying to create information that never existed. If I had a 60/40 mix of 720/1080 I would downscale everything to 720.

Wow that is incredible! Most publishers would even return emails or phone calls from independents. Nice work.
