extremely long render times
on Aug 17, 2014 at 3:51:16 am

It is taking 3.5 hours to render an 18min video.

Is this normal? Is there some codec I can use to improve things? I have a Core i5 CPU and 335m nVidia GPU.

May need a bit more info...What is the Media you are rendering- HD / SD, etc and what are the project setting. Did you Match the Project settings to the media? What are the render settings you are using for the Final output?. Regards John

The Core i5 is part of the problem. You really need a Core i7 for video work. I know a lot of people use Core i5's but usually these people don't care about rendering times and would rather save a few dollars. Intel suggests using Core i7's for content creation. Get a 6 core or 8 core if you really want to render faster.

Once you answer John's questions above we can probably help get things working faster but it's never going to be as fast as a better CPU would be.

It's 1080p30. Project settings are same as the media 1080p30. He are the render settings...

With 720p rendering it's significantly better (estimated 1.5hr. Didn't complete the render though. I was just checking.)

I noticed the text effects slow things considerably as well. I tried running Vegas with 335m engaged instead of integrated and it kept crashing during the render.

Just a question, it seems x264 isn't usable with Vegas, but is it faster? I used to use a program called Videopad and I seem to remember it took just a few minutes to render 20 min of video with that codec...I could be remembering incorrectly, but it certainly didn't take 1.5 hours to render 15min...

Are you referring to the x264vfw codec? It's available in Vegas if you install it and manually create a template for it. You need to make your own templates for any codecs that you install outside of Vegas.

Render time is not just the time it takes to encode the file, it's also the time it takes to create any FX you have applied to the video. So rendering a video with no FX will be faster than rendering a video with heavy FX using the same render settings.

Yes, exactly, that is what I meant. Thank you.

What do you think about this codec regarding quality, speed and compatibility with YouTube (in terms of YouTube re-rendering and end result quality) vs Sony's default.. Main Concept

Thanks

I deliver MainConcept AVC to YouTube using the Internet 720p template and I don't have a any problems with quality. I prefer MainConcept over Sony simply because it renders faster with my ATI Radeon HD 5870 GPU.
