Make effect only at the end of the image
on Aug 13, 2014 at 4:20:28 pm

I'm trying to use an effect that explodes the image at the end. It's a .png image. But it applies it to the beginning, exploding the image before it's had a chance to pan and scan.

I have seen something about key frames, but this doesn't come up when I select the effect, it only comes up with different aspects and adjustments I can make to the effect (but nothing about timing)

I have tried dragging it after the pan and scan, but this didn't give me the desired effect either.

Basically I want the image to explode, or exhibit the desired effect at the very end....

Any tips?

Regards

All FX have timelines that can be keyframed.
What version of Vegas are you using and what FX are you trying to apply to it?

Keyframes are one way to do this. An easier way is to split the event at the end and just apply the FX to the split part. Then it will just explode at the end.

I am using Vegas 13. With all effects I can't seem to find out how to keyframe it. All I see in the effect dialog box is the various options for changing how the effect shows, but no timing/keyframe option.

How to get the dialog box for keyframing for a given effect?

I understand the second method...Splitting. But I'd prefer to know how to do it the first way as well. I'm sure it will come in handy down the road.

You need to enable one of the parameters for keyframe automation. Just press the Animate button to the right of the parameter you want to keyframe and the keyframe timeline will appear.

Thanks. That is excellent.

If I'm reading this correctly, I would need to click on all of the parameters of the effect and then keyframe them all to properly render the effect at the correct time...

There's no single button to press to select the entire effect to keyframe? Seems odd.

No, you would only need to do that if you were changing all of the parameters which would be very rare. You only turn on key framing for the one or two parameters that you want to automate. If you did wan to automate them all then yes, you would need to activate them all.

In your example of having something happen at the end of an event, if the "Amount" parameters is what controlled the amount of explosion, then the amount would be zero until the end when you would make it 100 and you only need to animate one parameter to do that.

Hmm... Maybe I'm being confused by semantics. But I believe I understand now. I did not realize there was an amount parameter. So just keyframe the amount parameter.

It still seems strange that there's not a 'start effect here' on the segment and 'end effect here' on the segment. But I'm just getting used to the software...So.. I'm sure it's just my lack of understanding.

Since you didn't say what affect you're using and I don't know of any built-in effect that explodes the image I don't know if there is an "amount" parameter but there usually is a parameter that controls when something like an explosion will start and end. The point is, you usually only need to keyframe one or two parameters to make something animate.

In all of the video editing software that I've used, effects are always applied to en entire clip or event. As I stated earlier, the way to make it "start here" and "end here" is to split the clip and only apply it to a small section. That eliminates the need to keyframe.
