Improve DVD quality for SD video
on May 22, 2014 at 9:13:20 am

Unfortunately my friend filmed I presentation I did in SD (on a HDR-XR550 Sony Handycam).

The raw video is created in 720x576x32 in 25fps.

I have used Burn to DVD but the quality reduced when I played the DVD on the TV.

I have used Save to Hard Drive and used several templates under Mainconcept MPEG-2. But when I re-play them on my computer, there is still a reduction in quality.

Not sure what is the best to use or if there is something different I need to do.

(Basically my customer wants a copy of the video on DVD and on USB stick to replay to students as required).

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Do you have your project set up the same as the SD video source (720x576 @ 25fps.)? Unfortunately, that camera shoots SD as MPEG2 which is a very lossy format and it does degrade as you re-render it but just a single re-render should not show that much of a loss in quality. Can you post a screen shot of your project properties and render properties? Maybe someone will see something that's not right?

Thanks John. Yes, I did set up the project with the same raw data properties. As requested, screenshots below:

After importing the raw file (I used Match Media Settings).
Project Properties:

I then tried several render options:

Make Movie - Burn to DVD - DVD

Make Movie - MPEG2 - mainconcept mpeg2 - HDV720-25p

Make Movie - MPEG2 - mainconcept mpeg2 - dvdarchitect pal widescreen

I do notice that the quality is different again (worse or better) when playing the DVD on a DVD player compared to a computer.

[Lisa Mirtsopoulos] "After importing the raw file (I used Match Media Settings)."
That looks fine.

The Make Movie - Burn to DVD - DVD and Make Movie - MPEG2 - mainconcept mpeg2 - dvdarchitect pal widescreen should give the best quality.

You should always check with a real DVD player. That should give you the actual quality. But remember if you are viewing this on an HD TV that the footage is SD and it's not going to look that great anyway.
