We are Streaming a large medium and small versions of files using telestream mp4 with an h.264 codec. Is there any standard bits rates used out in the industry for SD footage? Any help or thoughts would be appreciated
What is the typical internet connection speed of the viewer?
For example, in NYC DSL is available at 3000kbps and Cable can go up to 30,000kbps.
Certainly "budget" users may be at 768kbps though.
Other parts of the country may have slower typical connections though.
Such questions might be:
• Regions you target (rural areas tend to have slower connections)
• Income bracket you target (businesses and professionals tend to have faster connections when available). If you're target people in "budget" brackets you may need lower data rates.
• Source Complexity (as Robert notes). Greater motion between frames generally requires higher bit rates to maintain quality or you must shrink frame size or lower frame rate.
