Checking an MXF file with 8 channels of audio
on May 8, 2013 at 1:30:25 am

I made an MXF file with 8 channels of audio in episode. When I check the file in media info it says that it has 8 channels. When I play the file in VLC player I have to manually toggle through track 1, 2, 3 etc. It has all 8 and I've confirmed that they are what they should be (stereo + 5.1). I'm not very familiar with MXF files but when I check an MPEG-2 file it plays all of the audio channels at once which I output to a scope or monitor with audio levels to check them. Why is the MXF file only playing one track at a time? Is there a problem with the file or is that just how MXF works? Thanks for any help.

Also the specs said ODG Mezz SD MXF. I'm not sure what ODG means. Thanks if anyone can clue me in.

I use Sony's XDCAM Viewer (a small standalone player application) for tasks like this. It has checkboxes for each of the audio channels so you can turn them on and off to hear each output.
