Happy New Year to PI (and Oh, God, Please) -- a 64-bit Version of PI :o)

Hi Alan,

First, Happy New Year to you and the PI posse. Second, I filled out the GenArts survey over the holidays not to win anything but to highlight your helpfulness over the years.

Now, for the title subject...
Any hopes of such a miracle?

It sure would make thing SO much easier for someone like me who creates rather complex emitters (and even though I've tried to apply all the common sense tips you've suggested). I have to work in HD or higher resolution too.

In short, too many crashes due PI not being able to access my coffer of 16 Gb. RAM and/or FPS crawls too low for in-work-flow assessments particle travel( I must sometimes render out a test file to see the real speed).

I know that the 64-bit question isn't new or unique, I'm sure you've been asked and considered it if feasible. Corel Paint and Firefox are still 32-bit. BUT they don't deal with drawing emitters either.

It seems that since GenArts is squarely in the thick of upper-echelon SFX that something could be woven into and through PI to make it 64-bit.

But then what do I know?
Nothing. I'm just a fan and user of PI.

But I can still dream/hope (as I'm sure others do) for a 64-bit version miracle one day. Maybe this year..? :o)

All the best,

~ Philip S. Knight

How do you know that system RAM is the problem? If you zoom out the stage so everything is very small and you get the same framerate, then you're probably CPU-limited (too many particles). If however you get higher framerates when everything is tiny, you're probably being limited by your graphics card hardware.

That being said, we understand the need for a 64-bit version of pI, and are working toward that. I can't give a timeframe for it, but it's in the plans.

Alan.
