I have a few QT and AVI clips with alpha channels but I am not sure whether they need to be converted to something else prior to importing into a PI project. How about importing them into the emitter library for added permanence?

You want to use them as a background for a layer, or for particles?

The Mac version supports Quicktime only, and the Windows version supports AVI (not Quicktime). You can convert to PNG image sequence which is supported by both versions.

If you're going to be using them for particles, then you can add them to a library, but that's not really "permanent", as they would be available to that one library only.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'd like to use the QT files as particles. In PI I created a background and in the layers panel on the left I right clicked on import but all I got was a position date dropdown and then a choose import from AE 5-8. I am currently using CS5 AE but didn't think I would need to go there. I just wanted to use Jose Burgos' Marlin download as a particle.
How to import and how to bring them even into the one project library I guess is what I need to know. I haven't used PI in some time but now I have a big project where I will be using it quite a bit using many of the particles in PI as well as rotoscoped frames from AE.

This tutorial shows how to change a particle's images:

Alan,
The url brought me to a tutorial on changing a text's image in logo emitters. All I want to do is bring in a QT file to use as a particle.

Yes. You can't just "make particle" from an image like you do in Apple Motion. You have an existing emitter, then you change the image(s) that are used for it.

The text tutorial shows you how. Instead of starting with a text emitter, start with one that will behave more like what you want.
