Igniting A Soccer Ball - The Tutorial

Several months ago I uploaded a demo video to the forum that showed kids in a rec soccer league playing with an apparently fiery soccer ball.

Here is the link to that discussion: http://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/23/859391

That clip was well-received (thanks, everyone!) and Aharon Rabinowitz requested that I create a tutorial on the workflow that I used.

After finding time to actually do the tutorial, and then acquiring the necessary web-compression and tutorial-making skills (thanks, Aharon!), the first part of that tutorial is complete.

I would have liked to have finished the tutorial as a single file. But the more I examined my workflow it became obvious that there was just too much material to cover in one session. So now it’s a two-part tutorial.

Part 1 is available now as both a Flash version and as a podcast. Here are the links:

Flash version (13:19, 32 MB, 800x600)

Podcast (13:19, 37 MB, 320x240)

You can either watch the podcast in your browser by left-clicking the link, or you can download it for your iPod by right-clicking the link and choosing "Save Link As..."

Part 2 is coming very soon.

Jeff: nice work! Part 2 coming soon I hope?

Don't know what you'll cover in part 2, but you may want to think about alternate ways of doing this, like using AE's motion tracker to track the branch tip (or whatever), then importing that into pI3 (you can r-click the layer offset in the hierarchy and "import - position data"). Although I don't know what you'd do when you need to pick a new reference point.

Thanks Bob, and thanks Alan.

I'm not smart enough to figure out how to use AE's motion tracker when there's a need for a new reference point. :-)

All I can do is expound on the technique that I use. Often, I edit just like I used to program in college - by brute force. ;-)

Great work Jeff.
I think everyone appreciates the time and effort you've taken to make this.
You might want to send it in to Kathryn at the Cow for the Illusion Tutorial page so everyone who perhaps doesn't read the forum as often will see it.

Part 2 of the tutorial is now available. I broke the tutorial into 3 parts because of some additional information included in part 2 and other considerations. Part 3 will follow sooner rather than later.
