Writing on water

I have been nspired by one clip in Alans latest emitter release.
This is the clip by Aharon of a character writing on a wall of water.
I am attempting to use PI to create animated writing that can be used as an animated bump map in Cinema 4D on a water texture.

Finding the best emitter that leaves a nice trail as would a finger in water is the hard part.

Any suggestions would be great.

Some guidance from Aharon would be most excellent.

Thanks

Greg

This was done using after effects. I created particles in pIllusion that followed the guy's (who will remain nameless, but who ryhmes with "Relvis Deane") finger around.

I then used the effect in AE called Caustics to to turn it into a water surface.

Let me know if you need further explanation or if that's enough to get you started.

Look at the new demo reel on the wondertouch site. There's a short clip in the middle of the reel that shows a "matrix"-like effect.

Hi Aharon,

I am ok with the final part which will be done with a 3d application (Cinema 4D)..... (no $$ for AE)

I am having trouble getting an emmitter that looks and behaves like a finger drawn through water.

Any suggestions on emmitter choice.

Thanks

Greg

I started with Smooth Glow 2 (Default library section 3), which I then modified. I removed the particle type called Glow.

I duplicated the particle type calle dtrail and made a few changes

- reset velocity over life to 100 over the entire life.
-Brought the Velocity up to about 60 or so

On the original Trail particle type, I shortened it's life a bunch (about 15?) to get the end of the trail to dissapear.

Made all the particles white, over a 50% gray background - very important for displacement maps to be on grey, not on black. Black pushes in the opposite direction as white. Gray doesn't push at all.

The thing is, that the footage needs to be blurred in some way. Otherwise, individual particles can be seen. The caustic effect let's you do this, but i don't know how you'd do this in 3D - Maya has a Pre-filter property on all textures that blurs it if you want, but I'm not sure about other programs.

That's a clip from one of the projects on my Creative Cow Master Series DVD - ParticleIllusion Fusion Vol 1.

In that tutorial, I explain how to do effects like that in depth, but it's not in anyway a secret. It's just a question of know how.

I matched the emitter to Melvis Cleane's (Name changed to protect the innocent) finger and use that as the Caustic Effects Displacement map, tweaking the effect for that look.
