Need opinion on Light Saber effect
on Aug 10, 2005 at 7:58:47 pm

I need your opinion on this light saber effect.
I have about a 30 second clip of a child in Karate
doing his bow kata. I want to turn the bow into a
light saber. What would be the best way to go about
this? to make one long light saber that went from one
end of the stick to the other and put a blocker in the
middle where his hands would be? And then put a
blocker on his body when the saber goes behind him.
Is there any other way that might be better?

Thanks for your help.

My thoughts on this is that it's a heckuva lot easier to animate two line emitters with two points each (two separate blades), than to animate one line emitter with two points, and then a blocker with who knows how many points to block out the hands. Especially if you're positioning things frame by frame in a 900 frame sequence.

When it comes to blockers (or any masking object in any compositing package), I find it best rather than to use one big blocker to cover the entire person's body, to break things down into smaller shapes. So one blocker for each arm, one for the torso, one for the head.

Thanks Elvis,

To be honest, that is how I started out doing the effect, when I reached frame 240 and thought it might be easier to do the one emitter to cover the whole bow and then go back and block the hand area. I thought about just making a square block for that area so it will just show the hands and a little bite of the bow staff, but I haven

I guess it all comes down to what's easier in that particular scene. If any of the points end up overlapping, you might mistakenly grab part of the wrong emitter/blocker, so it may be easier to manage by breaking them up over several layers. Blocker points are especially easy to grab by mistake, since their radius is so large.

Elvis, I hate to say this, but I need help with blockers. I'm adding a blocker layer
and I put say 4 points on a frame, but when I go to the next frame and move the points the
background from the first frame moves with the blockers. Is there a tutorial on how to
do blocker for something like what I
