Display footage filename of irregularly named image sequence
on Jun 19, 2013 at 9:03:47 pm

Hello,
I'm new to expressions, but think you may have a way to solve this problem:

I have an image sequence of irregularly named source files like:

  • 2012_08_08__00_00_40_40__SDO_HMI_HMI_continuum.png

  • 2012_08_08__00_02_55_40__SDO_HMI_HMI_continuum.png

  • 2012_08_08__00_14_55_40__SDO_HMI_HMI_continuum.png

  • ...

  • The individual image filename is a clue of when the image was taken (in this case by the NASA SDO satellite). In order to play them back smoothly, I have to adjust frame positions according to image capture date (unfortunately they are not always captured at equal intervals, or they show missing frames).

Is there a way to display current filename of image source in a text layer?

    thx for your help!!

    Thomas

If you import the images as individual files, this might be helpful:

If you import them as an image sequence, I don't think you can get at the individual file names.

    thx dan,

No, there's no way of importing them individually, there are thousands in a sequence...

How are you adjusting the frame timing? It might be possible to create a script that gets the timing info from the names of the images and does whatever you're currently doing by hand.

The Animation will basically be a timelapse-sequence (with the problem of irregular time intervals)

From the capture time (in the filename) I remap this frame in time to the correct time position with "time remapping".

Having a script, which puts the frame automatically to its correct position in time would be a wonderful feature!

I think it would be pretty straightforward. Probably less than two hours to code and test it (if you're familiar with scripting). Basically you would select the layer, and launch the script. The script would go to the source folder and get all image names, extract the time information from the image names, an set appropriate time remapping keyframes for each frame.
