One expression to preview Particular?
on Oct 7, 2011 at 6:43:39 pm

I'd like to link my motion preview setting of Particular to an expression, so I can toggle the many instances of Particular between preview and full render. Can I do this with an expression? The Render Mode setting allows me to turn on expressions, but I'm not sure how to write/pic-whip it so that I can give it a value from somewhere else, since it's a pulldown box with two options, "Motion Preview" and "Full Render". Can I plug in "Motion Preview" from another expression?

Thanks,
-Greg

You could link the Render Mode parameters to a Checkbox Control with an expressions like this:

thisComp.layer("controls").effect("Checkbox Control")("Checkbox").value + 1

When the Checkbox is unchecked, you get Motion Preview, when it's checked you get Full Render.

Thanks Dan. That works perfectly.

Am I correct in understanding that it works because the Checkbox control is submitting a (non-strict) Boolean as 0 or 1, and the Particular Render Mode pulldown is looking for a value of either 1 or 2? (It seems odd that AE pulldown menus wouldn't also be zero-based arrays.)

Yes, that's correct.
