DataVideo TBC-5000 - What is This VTR Setting?
on Jun 13, 2018 at 7:12:00 pm

I'm digitizing old VHS tapes and I'm running all of the VCRs through the DataVideo TBC-5000. For each input, there is a dip switch to toggle what the manual calls, "VTR: Revision picture quality when VHS source in."

Does anyone know what this is or does? Do I want to be using this setting when capturing VHS content? The wording makes it sound like it should be used with VHS tapes, but "Revision Picture Quality" makes it sound like it lowers the quality.

Thanks!

I'm going to guess that the switches set the inputs to deal with the less than stable outputs from a VTR as opposed to the more or less stable outputs from a source like a camera. It may switch it into a hetrodyne decoding mode or one with a larger TBC window to handle the instability of the non brodcast VTR.
Switch it on and see if you can see any noticeable differences, especially of you have a waveform/vector monitor available.

Thanks! I think you're right.

I absolutely need to have the VTR setting on if I'm passing VHS footage through the TBC. It's just a little weird that it needs to be on, cause if I bypass the TBC, the VHS footage looks fine on a good tape. However, if that same tape goes through the TBC and VTR is off, then it actually looks worse than the source.
