Capture settings

Heyo,

I'm editing a church program that is shot with old Ikegami SD studio cameras and switched using a Blackmagic ATEM switcher. We're using AJA's VTR Xchange to capture from program and using Apple ProRes 422 compression. Currently, a 2 hour service runs around 40GB.

My question is, is there a compression that would create smaller file sizes without a noticeable difference in quality once it's broadcast on TV?

We'll be transitioning to HD eventually and file size vs. storage capacity at that point will have to be re-examined. I just want to make sure I'm not wasting drive space.

Standard ProRes 422 is great for SD video. You might try ProRes LT as it is a bit smaller bandwidth (~16 GB per hour). Below that, you have ProRes Proxy as an option (~8 GB per hour), but I would avoid proxy res for anything you want on air or archival. LT's quality, especially for SD video, is definitely acceptable and will probably have no noticeable difference when compared with standard ProRes.

Thanks so much Mark! I completely missed the ProRes LT as an option. I'll be trying it tonight.

Thanks again,

Les
