as extra service to our multicamerashoot's / Imag facilities we often create analog RF/Broadband circuit's for
backstage / VIParea monitoring. in the years it has been a very reliable cheap and easy solution.
but there is one problem. you always end up with composite or a signal derived from composite.
in the early day's this wasn't a real problem. normal TVset's had proper RFcircuit's and relativly good PAL/NTSCdecoder's. next to that the CRTwas very forgiving. we can not say this about the ConsumerFlatscreens sold these day's (often supplied by sponsers like JVC/Panasonic) the RFcircuit's are bad and the CompositeDecoders are discusting. this is not a big deal for backstage/utility monitoring but is a problem in the VIParea's
RFcircuit's have a few very strong advantages they are cheap easy to install. next to that they are very immune to distortion and the cable consumption is relativly low. most components are passive (no local power needed) and users can be miles away. cable runs often are higher then 100mtr in stadium setup's.
finding a solution with a higher quality is hard when you want to keep it in budget.
the most obvious solution would be DVB-C but the Encoding / modulator setup is quite expensive
10times a analog modulator. not even talking about setupboxes needed at the recievingsite's. or the extra Conditional Access managment needed when integrated DVB-C recievers are used.
the next solution would be IPtv/streaming but again setupboxes. and a rather cable consuming star or multistar network. and a 100mtr limit on copper and local power needed at every switch/hub/fiber reciever. are there switches powerd by power over ethernet ???
next to that a lot of special know how is needed onsite (this can not be done by a average video engineer) where normally everything has been calculated in the office.
