Captioning for XDCAM
on May 28, 2009 at 11:23:21 pm

Hi-
I have some 30 minute shows that we need to send out, and some of the TV stations that will be airing it want it on XDCAM. This means we need to caption on XDCAM, and sadly, we can't find someone in the state that has done that.

So what is the process for laying off to XDCAM with captions? We're hoping to be able to do it on a drive, not a deck. Any ideas?
Thanks!
James

Few questions James.
Am assuming you mean delivery on XDCAM optical disc, but what flavour on that disc? SD (IMX30/40/50, DVCAM) or HD.
How do you currently produce your captioned masters? And is there any reason our can't produce these XDCAM master the same way?
If HD then you might want to take a look at the recent Matrox MXO2/MacCaption collaboration.

Thanks, Andy-
It is HD, and sadly we don't have the Matrox box. We have a local place do our captioning, and they have never touched XDCAM. What they're proposing is they would make a HDCAM master of the show, and then we would take over an XDCAM deck, and we'd play out of the HDCAM and record on the XDCAM. I'm just seeing if there is an easy way (that is available to us).
Thanks again,
James

Well if they don't have the XDCAM recording hardware themselves then you could take your deck over and have them layoff to XDCAM directly in the same way as they already lay off to HDCAM tape ... or as proposed, just dub from an HDCAM master. Same same but different really.
