Broadcast Audio

We have a Sony BetacamSP deck here at our studio and we use Final Cut to export programming onto Betas. My question is regarding the audio levels and the best way to judge them. My color bars always peak right under the Red and the program will bounce between 20 and 2 usually. I am just wondering, what is the best way to judge if the audio levels are good? Should the program levels peak the same as the color bars. Should I make adjustments in final cut? Because there deck levels aren't always consistent

if your Beta VTR is a UVW-1800, you CANNOT use the meters to judge audio. They do not reflect accurate audio levels. the only thing you can do is to bring up bars and tone in your FCP system, and set ZERO TONE (0 VU, or +4dBu) on your beta VTR. When you output your program, the levels will be correct, but your average audio level will look VERY LOW on an UVW-1800. It's been this way on the 1800 since they came out.
