Projection problem
on Nov 23, 2008 at 6:17:35 pm

Hi,

my subtitled documentary (edited in FCP) was recently screened during a festival via a Beta SP tape. However, during the projection the white of my subtitles contained black lines, some kind of dirt. The rest of the screen wasn't affected and was fine.

Does anyone know what happened???

Thanks.

My guess is that your video was too hot. If you created the white letters in photoshop or some other computer program you need to check the levels. never create at RGB of 255.255.255 create at 235.235.235 this will make the video levels within broadcast standards. Same with blacks never create black at 0.0.0 create at 16.16.16 and you should be safe and not have problems with projectors or tape playback.

Thanks for the response.

So do you think it's related to my color levels?

I didn't do the subtitles in any other program, there were done (& embedded) in FCP, but I did boost the saturation a bit for the whole film...
However, despite the "dirty" white of the subtitles, the picture was perfect.

I really feel that video levels are your problem. Did you look at a scope to see what your white levels are? Alswo check vectorscop-e and make sure no colors are outside the circle. Also make sure the chroma on scope is not too far into sync.

Do you know which which tool I can use in Final Cut Pro to check my white levels? I have no experience in this field at all.

Thanks a lot!

Sorry, maybe you should post this in the FCP forum. I have never worked with FCP, so I am not familiar with it. MAC's don't like me for some reason, I think they smell my PC on me.
