HD Broadcast Standards
on Jul 29, 2008 at 3:40:34 am

I've recently been enlisted to help on a pretty big project... which has to meet HD broadcast standards. (color gamut, delivery format, etc)

Can someone please tell me where these standards are? I've been searching the web, and can't seem to find any hints as to what corporations (specifically ESPN in this case) are looking for.

Any help would be very appreciated!

This link will start you on the journey. The Technical specs are linked. If you meet these specs you'll be OK with ESPN. Exceptions are tape delivery format and the fact that ESPN is 720p while PBS is 1080i. HTH

16 x 9 HD commercials must be produced with “4x3 protection”, meaning all critical commercial content and graphics appear within the
4x3 middle of the 16 x 9 aspect ratio.
DVC Pro and D5 are the only acceptable format to be supplied for HD broadcast. No multi-reels will be accepted.
Tape box, spine, reel and slate should be clearly labeled and include the following information: HD5 720p, Advertiser name, Ad-ID
(ISCI), commercial length, commercial title, and 8 channel audio configuration.
All commercial traffic instructions must include the “H” at the end of the Ad-ID (ISCI) to indicate the insertion of the HD commercial.
ESPN can broadcast only down-converted, center-cut protected content for the Standard Definition audience. Any HD commercial
material submitted to ESPN networks for broadcast that is approved by Commercial Operations will air as produced on HD (i.e. – in full
format) and will be simulcast in center-cut format (i.e. – in 4x3 format) on the SD networks.
Please refer to ESPN’s Television Commercial Delivery Specifications for technical specifications for the delivery of
