Lighting in a Color Grading room
on Jan 14, 2008 at 2:52:02 pm

Hi everybpdy,
I'm setting up a new color grading room for TV Show and commercials. I was wondering if it was better to get a dark room or a bright D65 backlight?

Most of the work we do is SD but the room will be setup for HD work as we expect to increase our HD costumers.

Thanks

Traditionally you would have a dark room with a 65K light behind the monitor that was 10 percent of the peak white of your monitor.

With LCDs, the world can change. The blacks which suck on an LCD, start to look better as the ambient light in the room comes up. The exact opposite of the CRT.

in other words, since we are in a transitional stage without appropriate monitors, all bets are off for the time being. What type of monitor are you going to be using?

We are going with a 24in LCD CineTal or a TVLogic. Both are LCD.
