Where's a good starting point for Bitrate selection?
I'm using Adobe Media Encoder CS5
This is for On Demand type web video in 720.
Thanks!!!

Are you going to upload to YouTube or Vimeo for their compression or are you doing the final compression to host it?

Bit rate usually depends on content. Talking heads lower, fast action sports or motion graphics higher.

Great question. We host own own. We offer 2 options: a High (720) and Low (640). Outdoor action, with LOTS of detail. Just wondered what your starting point might be for the 720?
My screen grab above shows my last test...

For 1280x720 a range of 1500-5000kbps depending on content.
You could start at the low end and do a test encode over a complex section of about two minutes and see how it looks.
Outdoor with tree branches or leaves blowing or water rippling tends to be challenging. Also gradients found in some sky shots can also be a challenge.
On the other hand a reporter doing a stand up against a clear sky would be less challenging.

Thanks. I did a test at 1.81 Mbps and saw some deterioration (after a 2.25 Mbps test).
that's 1800kbps, and it looked OK. Not great but OK. Hmm... Our footage tends to be very challenging. Dang thanks for your feedback Craig Seeman. I'm open to any other feedback!

I'll go back to my original suggestion and try 1400kbps at 960 x 540 and see how that looks, from a size/quality trade off.
