Encoding from 1080 Apple ProRes for a local diffusion on computer?
on Sep 10, 2012 at 12:57:24 pm

Hi,

I need your advises..

I have a FinalCut Pro 7 exported file:
1920x1080 Apple Prores HQ + 16 bit Stéréo 48,000 Khz

I have to send it to a foreign place where it will be displayed in loop during an exhibition. I will not be present.
It's said that it will be played on 2 distinct places by 2 computers (not sure if all are Mac).
I supposed that they should be played by QuickTime or VLC on both platforms.
But I have to compress it as for 26 minutes it's quite huge: 24Go

Could you please tell me if there would be a better solution:
I think to compress the original file in H264/AAC at high level quality and send the resulted file on a USB key or via a web server.
(I could rip a BluRay DVD but I have no BluRay recorder and I'm not sure it's easy to do it on Mac even if I have Compressor 4 to encode)

I've heard here that Handbrake or Squeeze do better job with H264 than Compressor.
With Handbrake I am around these settings:
a 1920x1080 .mp4 file with x264 Constant Quality RF 13 and AAC (core audio) Stereo 320 @ 48
Is that OK ?

Thanks for your help

Paul

No help...
:-(

just to simplify my question:
what codec and compression settings would you use to reencode an Apple ProRes video file sent by internet that would be played on computers from different platforms?

PC and Mac can play back H264 so you should be safe with your settings in Handbrake.

H.264 .mp4
Even Windows Media Player 12 plays it natively (Windows 7)
Those on Vista or Windows XP would still need Quicktime.

Thanks a lot for your answers.

So I have used Handbrake to encode with x264 my original 20 minutes ApplePro Res file 1920x1080 25fps
I have used RF15 to get maximum quality and fulfill the 2Go free data transfer offered by WeTransfer
Do you think that the quality should be OK: the result is 14Mbits
(I could use my own server to share larger files)

If not the other solutions could be :

- to increase the RF ?
But is it safe to read all day long on a computer a looping file with high bandwidth? It's for an exhibit, and I am scare of choppy movie...

- to encode up to 25Mbits and burn a BluRay?

What do you think ?
