Transcoding Prores

I've heard around that after editing a format in prores one should put it back in the format that it was transcoded from like avchd or hdv. But since those compression techniques use temporal compression isn't it possible that information could get lost in the process. I'm guessing that the compression algorithm has no way of knowing which frames were the original key frames.

Also, what if one doesn't know what the prores file was transcoded from in the first place?

Thank you,

Eben

Hey Eben,

Not sure why you'd wanna 'put it back' in its original format. ProRes works well enough for most workflows including NatGeo, Disney, Warner Bros., Discovery and most other major networks / studios.

What Michael said. ProRes is the best possible mezzanine. Don't do any further transcoding.
